Oh please bear with me, we have Vonage in the house (one phone number) we are 4 roommates, everything was ok for awhile, but lately some roomies have been complaining about their privacy, there are 2 people in the house that don't want the account manager to know who they call or how long they are on the phone, or even who calls them, is it possible to keep Vonage and if they want to get their own private phone number on their computers, with programs such as AIM phoneline or yahoo etc will their calls and phone numbers show up on the Vonage account/billing?
I want to keep Vonage, but they want to get their own private numbers and if the line goes through the same modem/IP number, I believe its not compatible, can anyone enlight me with this please, I highly appreciate any help I can get, thank you in advance

If I am understanding your situation correctly Darla, if your roommates want to get AIM phoneline so that they could have their own phone number and hence privacy, it will give them some privacy although they will have to use their computer with a microphone and speakers instead of a regular phone. If they want to make calls, they will have to pay the $9.95/month.

If they get AIM phoneline, then your Vonage account will not register their calls and hence it will provide them with some level of privacy. Vonage only keeps track of phone calls made through their adapter. Calls made through programs like skype, AIM phoneline, etc will not get detected nor registered by your Vonage account.

However, do realize that if everyone is on the phone at the same time, you will need to make sure that your Internet connection has enough bandwidth to handle all the simulataneous calls. Vonage in its highest setting takes up 90kbps both upload and download.

Most cable internet connections can handle around 256 - 384 kbps upload which means you could handle about 2 Vonage phone calls (if you have the 256kbps upload) at the same time without running into choppy calls etc. If all 3 of you are on the phone at the same time with you on Vonage and your 2 roommates on AIM phone line, I would think that there would be issues of call quality. I don't know how much bandwidth AIM takes but it will start to add up.

I hope this help.

You have a couple of issue here. It's certainly possible to get multiple numbers on the same account, and up to two numbers on a single adapter. However, the calls will appear in the log for that account.

If people want complete privacy, then they can each get an individual account with Vonage and use the same internet connection, provided you have the bandwidth to handle it. Each separate account will need its own Vonage adapter, and you'll need a good router to service the adapters. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. The only real issue is the quality of the internet service.

Thank you mundy5 and yes you understood my situation correctly: ) now are you absolutely positive about "If they get AIM phoneline, then your Vonage account will not register their calls and hence it will provide them with some level of privacy. Vonage only keeps track of phone calls made through their adapter. Calls made through programs like skype, AIM phoneline, etc will not get detected nor registered by your Vonage account"

They have their laptops and one of them is very seldom home, so its only 3 of us, we all have different schedules so I don't think we would have major problems on the calls department, but we share the internet provider and Vonage and these two other people don't want to get another Vonage account each, basically the problem is between these two, have their own issues and they're fighting over clients or something, and want their own numbers at least one of them does very badly, if the use of any of those programs will go undetected by Vonage, that would be the end of the problem because they wont know who is calling who, but if for some strange reason the calls appear in the log for the account as Steve48 kindly explained to me, then we will be back to square one = total chaos ..I need to know for sure before the situation gets out of hand. Thank you very much both of you for your help : )

that's correct. As long as they use their own computer to make the calls, it will not be registered by Vonage. Vonage only registers calls made through the phone connected to the adapter that Vonage sent to you. As long as they do not use a physical phone but only a microphone and speakers through their computer, they are good to go.

why not show them the wifi phones Vonage offers or the .usb thumb drive Vonage offers... that would be an easy-setup and should cause no problems with your current setup...

plus you refer them and all of you get a discount off the service for the 1st month
