PostPosted: Fri Oct 06, 2006 8:57 am    Post subject: Strange Recording & Getting "unprovisioned" Reply with quote Back to top

1. Montgomery Co. Maryland
2. Comcast
3. 384/4000
4. Motorola SB4100
5. Motorola VT2442
6. Cable Modem-->HBB1-->Netgear FVS318-->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Recently, my Vonage service has been disconnecting itself (not my internet connection). When I pick up the phone there is either dead air or a strange recorded voice "This phone line is..." and then nothing the female voice does not complete the sentence. I login to the VT224 and see that it is not provisioned. I either can reboot the adapter or have to power down everything and it then shows up as provisioned. Any ideas?

I use my FVS318 as my "router" (IP Address 10.100.1.1).
The VT224 hangs off my router (IP Address 10.100.1.110). I have been using it that way for over a year now and have had excellent service.

Any assistance would be appreciated,

cmajewsk

How often does it happen? I would start troubleshooting by removing the FVS and plugging the VT directly into the modem.

This just started yesterday evening. I came home and rebooted/unplugged, and was fine. And then it occurred this morning - did the same thing and also called Vonage - they could not help me beyond what I already did - they just had me do it again.

I also noticed that when it happened yesterday that some calls were forwarded to my cell phone - as it should when there is a disruption in service - but I never received any of them. Vonage could not help me with that - only to say there may have been "issues" with the internet/cell towers.

I can't explain why it would have started suddenly, but I'd go ahead and see what eliminating the FVS.

Not sure why it works fine after a reboot, and then mucks up after an hour or so.

Here is what the modem looks like when it "unprovisions". A reboot seems to only work for a few hours - in that it provisions successfully for only a short while.

Something similar happened to me earlier this week I think it was 10/3/06 My Moto4224 went dead. When I picked up the line there was either dead air or a MALE voice that just said "This phone line" and did not complete the sentence. I use a static IP address for my Vonage box. When I logged into the Vonage box to check it out, I discovered that it had forgotten its default route. I put it back and everything started working again.

Of course the real question is what happened? Why did it loose that one bit of information? Is it possible that Vonage pushed some new configuration to my box and that messed it up?

Where do you see the default route? Under what Tab?

I copied my LAN and WAN pages. To get mine to work I had to setup the LAN for some reason and have at least 1 cable plugged into the LAN even though I am not using the switch part of it. You'll notice that the WAN address is 10.100.1.110 and the LAN address is 10.1001.111 - without configuring both it would not work. One thing I did to try and fix this was to input the OpenDNS DNS addresses and replaced them with my Comcast DNS addresses which were replaced on my primary router about 3 months ago, and never did make the change on the Vonage Adapter.. Although my primary router is already setup to use the OpenDNS DNS addresses, the Vonage Adapter probably gets them, as the 1st DNS address is my primary router - 10.100.1.1.

Any other suggestions? A reboot of the adapter automatically fixes the "unprovisioned" issue within seconds and I get a dialtone, so something is causing the adapter to unprovision - It will state it cannot connect to the configuration servers. But it obviously can, as a reboot will fix it temporarily i.e. for about 4 hours.

I'm wondering if this is related to a recent firmware update pushed for all vt2442s. It could have messed with your configuration although it should not have. Can't trust these firmware updates anymore.

That is interesting. Where did you see this? My issue is when I call Vonage they just tell me to keep power cycling the modem...which like I stated before is only good for a few hours. Everytime I try and explain that this only works temporarily, they say that this reset, and reboot will fix it for good. But of course it never does. Almost like there is a timeout on it or something. Oh well...What's intersting is even after I changed the DNS addresses they keep changing back after a reboot (not a reset) to the Comcast addresses.
DNS 1: 10.100.1.1 (primary router - which is set to use static DNS addresses from OpenDNS.org
DNS 2: 68.87.73.242
DNS 3: 68.87.71.226
