Tell us a bit more. What do you mean when you say you're "off grid"? What kind of broadband service do you have?

If what you're trying to do is to simply hook up a piece of recording equipment- the dictaphone- that works with ordinary phone services, then you would want to use one of the Vonage router/adapters like the Motorola VT2442/2142 or the D-link VWR. If you have a router already you could use the D-link VTA. You would not be able to use a V phone or a WiFi phone.or one of the IP phones. These devices connect directly to the internet and don't have jacks to connect to other telephone equipment.

No utilities come to my ranch. Solar and wind powered with Hughes Net service.

OK, tell us about Hughes Net Service. This is a broadband internet service? What kind of performance does it provide? Assuming that it is a broadband ISP and you're considering Vonage, run the forum Voip test (menu, top left, Vonage Information/VoIP Speed Test. Post the detailed results here.

Hughes.net formerly DirecWay Sat Broadband.

Present service is slow as I just used it for home surfing. I have ordered the new modem and will post results when it arrives in a few days.

We'll be here.

In the meanwhile, you might want to search the forum on "satellite". I'm sorry to say that people don't usually have much luck using Vonage (or any Voip) with satellite services. The turn around time is just too long.

Those SPEEDS would work, but please understand that SPEED is not the only factor in having usable Voip service. The problem most often experienced with satellite Internet and Voip is the "latency" or delay on that sort of connection. The Vonage speed test will give you better feedback - not just speed but jitter, quality of service (the STABILITY of the speed) and more.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Best bet is to try a VoIP-specific test BEFORE signing up for any Voip service. www.testmyvoip.com is a common one.

Overall, Voip via satellite is very poor. Too much of a delay in the satellite transmission to make it happen reliably. You can actually do Voip over a dial-up 33.6k modem if you know what you're doing because of the low latency.

Sat is my only option since we are off the utility grid, and it is for downloading voice files via dictaphone, not for conversation.

Any thoughts on the success of using it for this vs. using for general conversation?

Received my new modem and during the process to upgrade my package to a faster plan, my transmitter went bad. Waiting for a tech to come fix it...
