I currently have both a Vonage line that I've had for 3 years now and I recently had to sign up for a basic AT&T PSTN line to appease the state daycare licensing people and their fear of Vonage's 911 and power-failure susceptibility.

I was wondering of there was a device or something similar that would allow my existing phones to intelligently use the two lines together. The biggest thing I'm looking for is if someone picks up a phone and dials 911, I want it to go through the PSTN line and not Vonage. It would be nice if it routed local calls through the PSTN instead of Vonage, also, since the PSTN number is the one we will be using for our daycare, and don't really want to confuse parents with the "Vonage Holdings" caller ID name if we can easily avoid it.

I noticed some ATA devices made by Zoom have this feature, but I don't believe Vonage supports their ATAs. Anyone know of anything that will work, other than spending $500+ to set up an Asterisk box?

The daycare licensing agency's justifications are lame, but I understand the need to work with them.

There are inexpensive devices that would do something similar to what you want, but many of them aren't designed for one important function, that is, to operate when power is lost. The same could be said for an Asterisk server, especially since it would take a much larger UPS to run it for an extended time.

My suggestion would be to use two line phones. It would take the self discipline to select line 2 for non-local calls. It should also be possible to have the phone company restrict your POTS line to local calls so as to prevent inadvertent long distance dialing on your POTS line.

You could also mount a "red" wall phone specifically for use in emergency situations that was a single line phone connected to your POTS line.

You should have your networking equipment and adapter on a UPS. You should have phones available that work in the event of a power outage. It makes me wonder if the licensing agency checks to see if such phones are available.

I'm all for the red phone idea, just make sure it's line-powered so that this whole plan isn't self-defeating. It's too bad Vonage doesn't freely hand out SIP credentials....i

f you had the SIP credentials, the Sipura SPA3000 has a POTS input port and Voip and can be programmed to route 911 calls via POTS while putting the rest of the calls through Voip and also has automatic power failure rollover to the POTS line. It actually acts like an FXO port for the POTS line, so you could use Voip phones/PBX for it. Quite a nifty little box.
