511 Traveler Information

Avoid Getting Stuck In Traffic

511 Traffic Information available from your Vonage phone

Vonage customers can now get free local traffic and transit information (where available) simply by dialing 511. If your local State Department of Transportation has joined the states across the country participating in the Advanced Traveler Information Services program (511), you can access it from your Vonage phone.

Where It's Available

Vonage can connect you to traveler information services that have been established by each State Department of Transportation across the country. Currently, 24 states have setup systems, with many more in the planning and early implementation system. If it's available, Vonage can connect you.

How It Works

When you sign up for Vonage, you are automatically registered to access 511 traffic information at the address where you will be using your Vonage service. When you dial 511 from your Vonage phone, your Vonage service address is matched against the national database of traveler information numbers and your call is automatically routed to the appropriate number.

Speed Up Your Commute

A quick call to 511 before you leave your home can help you avoid traffic and speed up your commute. Best of all 511 is Free with your Vonage account!

Funny thing about Virgina's 511 information is that they only have two recordings for every road. "Jammed" or "Forget it, just stay home!". Smile

I live in Maine, and I'd MUCH rather they get my county up on E911 (The Sagadahoc county emergency response center seems more than willing...). Especially since we don't have traffic reporting up here in the hinterlands anyway.

Actually, though, I can see why this is so easy to set up. I just called the number, and it simply routed me to the Maine Department of Transportation's Traffic Hotline, which asked what city I wanted traffic for, then after 30 seconds of odd little musical tones trying to fool me into thinking a computer was trying to recognize my voice when I gave it my local town, came back and said "We're sorry, the system is currently unavailable." (operators obviously got stuck in traffic on the way to work or something). Smile

Still, even though this was a simple call-forward, I would rather have Vonage burn the time on setting up a couple of new E911 call centers.

Or, if you really want to impress me, set up a three-digit dial system where *I* specify the numbers. Online speed dial.

I got a Vonage e-mail today and read about the traffic 511 feature. I though, "way cool!"

I checked the website to confirm California is one of the "States that currently have travel information services." It's listed. BUT, when I call 511, a recording tells me "511 is not currently available in your area."

Bummer

FYI, my area code is 562 and my ZIP is 90703.

And yet, it works fine here in Maine. Smile

All in all, though, I'd rather have E911.
