And so begins the downfall of Voip. Here are my Aug, Sept, and Oct Vonage bills. Every month, one or more new taxes/fees. It won't be long before the Vonage bill looks just my old Verizon bill.

Also note that Vonage has elected to charge us the *optional* Federal Universal Service Surcharge. (explained at http://sonic.net/support/docs/fusf.shtml) I interpret that as a sign of success. When a company gobbles up enough market share, it cares less about being competitively priced and more about squeezing out every penny it can from its customers.

I am going to step in here and disagree.

Yes, Voip services are getting taxed, but in many cases the same percentage cost savings on your service are passed through on your taxes. This is particularly true in the case of sales taxes that are not flat rate but based on the total amount of your bill.

On specific fees I have certain issues:
  • USF - I have always supported Voip participation in the USF program because I think that Voip would be a better mechanism to deliver universal service in dense urban areas ('The Projects') and would have the side effect of bringing Internet access into poor communities. Of course the USF program is incredibly corrupt and wasteful so that is a problem. I also believe that the USF is going to have to take into account the different between the connectivity and the service on both the collection and the service side. As far as whether Vonage should pass this through as a separate line item or include it in the cost of doing business, I think they need to do what their competitors do so that people can make apples-to-apples decisions.   • E911 Recovery Fee - I objected to how the FCC mandated E911 for Voip should work. I believe that they built in an advantage for the PSTN and have therefore levied higher E911 costs onto Voip customers while significantly crippling E911 service for Voip customers (nomadic Voip 911 is handled inefficiently for example).
  • Regulatory recovery fee - this is a bogus charge and should be included in the cost of doing business, it is absurd that you can advertise a cost of service and then tack on fees like this one that have a nebulous purpose like legal costs. In my opinion Vonage should be forced to provide customers a monthly accounting of just how these fees are spent so that we can be assured they are sized correctly and used for the specified purposes.
