Post subject: Linksys RTP300 vs Dlink-VTA
I have been using the RTP300 for a while now, I usually travel with it, but due to the size of the RTP300, I recently bought a Dlink VTA. But having read some of the bad comments on Dlink VTA, now I don't know if I should call
Vonage
and swap my number to Dlink VTA...
I like the Dlink VTA because it is small, but other than that, it is still in box unopen.... Any suggestions?
Thanks

I've seen more bad comments about the D-link VWR than the VTA, but, for myself, I'd rather keep the RTP300. Still, it's a matter of what works best for you. If the routing capabilities of the RTP are of no use to you and you travel frequently, the VTA may be just right. I don't think I'd reject it just on the basis of a little bad press in here.

you can transfer your number from one device to another in your
Vonage
On-line Web Account. Just log in and go to the ADD-ONS link and there's an option to MOVE-A-NUMBER. It will give you a list of available
Vonage
devices and numbers in your account and let you manage the number transfers

Wow, I didn't know I can do that myself. I was under the impression that I must call
Vonage
and provide the MAC Address of Dlink-VTA. I will give the method you mentioned a try. BTW, how many time can we move the number per year? and do we get charged for doing so?
Thanks

Hmmm. I hope Xcrunxc steps in here, because I don't think things are that simple. The way I read it, if you have more than one
Vonage
number on more than one adapter, then you can move numbers around between adapters using the add ons feature. However, if you only have one number and one adapter, this wouldn't apply.
Now, if you go to the
Vonage
home page (not logging on to your account) you can select retail activation and enter the MAC for a new adapter. However, I believe this deactivates your old one. Whether they would ever want to re-activate it isn't clear. I doubt that they're going to allow you to jump back and forth using this route.

I had the RTP300 for about 14 months before it died a slow death. For months, when it got warm, it would squeal like a pig (faint, but annoying). Recently, due to a botched firmware, it had tons of static, which made phone conversations impossible.
Being out of warranty by 2 months, I went to a local store and purchased a D-link VTA-VR. I called up
Vonage
, got through immediately, and within 5 minutes, I had the new device set up. It works great and find it clearer than the RTP300. Conversations also appear to be "more full duplex" than the RTP300.
I've had the VTA for about a week now and have 0 complaints. It passed the WAT (Wife Acceptance Test) with flying colors.
If you already have a good router (I have a WRT54G), there's no reason the VTA should be overlooked.

Thanks Craig. I have the RTP300 router, will need to buy one router. I'll look into WRT54G wireless router

FWIW, I've had a D-Link VTA for a couple of weeks now, without any problems. I mentioned to a client today that I'm on a
Voip
line and he was shocked -- thought I sounded like I was "next door."

What router are you using?

I have a bit of a complicated setup. I have a D-Link DI-LB604 router, which has QoS, so the D-Link VTA box has higher priority than any other traffic going out. Between the router and the cable modem I put a D-Link DI-102 box. I've tested this setup by making phone calls while doing ftp uploads, and also while checking upload Internet speed at sea.speakeasy.net, and no garbles or choppiness. Since adding the DI-102 box, I did notice that my highest upload speeds have dropped by about 10% (from 900 mbps to 800 mbps), but that's OK.
