Why do they make IP or VoIP Phones if a regular phone works?
I just a use a regualr 5,8Ghz Panasonic wireless model KX-tg5621 plugged into the d link VTA-VD.
Why would someone pay extra for a VoipPhone? |

IP Phones are mainly for use in a business environment where the wiring to each user is ethernet. |

Also . . . Vtech (and maybe others) has a Vonage VoIP phone that is a cordless, multi-handset phone with the Vonage adapter built-in.
If a consumer needs Vonage in multiple rooms in their house, can't or is not comfortable with doing whole house distribution of their Vonage, and perhaps does not currently own a cordless phone, it can be a good choice technically (I personally don't like it) and does not necessarily even cost more, compared to the cost of a stand-alone adapter (free - $40 or so) plus the cost of a multi-handset cordless phone ($30 - $50 or more).
So . . . personally, I don't like them, but, even in residential use, there is a logical use for them! |

For a corded phone it doesn't matter so much, but for a modern cordless phone, the current analog route is inefficient to say the least. Here's why. The cordless handset digitizes your speech and sends the digitized stream to the base station. The base station then has to convert it back to an analog signal and send it to your phone adapter where the analog signal gets digitized again and sent over the Internet. It is obvious that once your speech is digitized it should just be packaged up and sent over the Internet and not converted to analog in order to be digitized again at the other end of your phone cord. This old fashion solution is also prone to pick up noise on the way to the phone adapter. |
