PostPosted: Fri Sep 29, 2006 11:32 pm    Post subject: How to monitor the actual bandwidth used by vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a program called DU Meter that does a fine job monitoring my upload/download speed for everything except my Vonage dlink vta. When the phone is in use, the bandwidth consumption doesn't show up in DU Meter.

So is there a program that will monitor the vta bw usage?

DU meter monitors the speed of the traffic on your computer only. The traffic from the Vonage ATA does not flow through your PC.

Yeah but it's going through my router so I figured there must be something that could measure it. Yes, dumeter monitors my ethernet card.

Is there a problem that you are trying to solve? At the highest sound quality, Vonage is going to use 90 kbps max.

Not really, but I've had people complaining about sound quality while I was downloading/uploading at half my max speed so I was curious what exactly it's using. Like I was uploading at 560kbps and my total upload speed is just under 1,000kbps, meanwhile the person I was talking to said I was breaking up. Theoretically I should have had way more than enough reserve for Vonage.

if you want to ensure that your voice traffic gets priority over any other upstream traffic, you can add an Voip Accelerator such as the D-Link DI-102

That only helps manage upstream right? So downloading will still effect voice quality. I have a linksyswrt54gs and I have qos turned on but I need to adjust it. Would the dl-102 be any better than what I currently have?

Yes

Typically, your broadband connection allows a higher download speed than upload speed. For example, download speed might be 3 Mbps, while upload is 300 kbps. The call requires 90 kbps, so prioritizing upload is more critical than download.

I don't know. The Dlink DI-102 fits between your broadband modem and your existing router (wired or wireless).
