PostPosted: Thu Sep 28, 2006 7:52 pm    Post subject: Vonage and Telecom Italia "Alice" Reply with quote Back to top

SORRY, had to repost as a new topic, oops!

I just switched apartments in Rome, Italy and now use Telecom Italia DSL instead of Fastweb DSL.

I had zero probs with fastweb, but big ones with Telecom and Vonage.

I'm plugging it in without any wireless router or anything else in the loop. It's the Telecom Italia DSL modem to the Vonage modem then to my computer. I get no dial tone and no internet connection.

Without the Vonage modem, the internet connection works great.

Any clues? I could really use some brains here.

Thanks,
Curt

Do you have to log into your DSL service with a username and password on your computer? When your DSL service got set-up did they make any changes to your computer, or add a static IP address into the network configuration? What device do you have so I can give you some more detailed info on what needs to be done?

Your computer works with the service without the router in the loop, so you need to take a close look at the network setup on the computer. You need to duplicate that setup on the WAN side of the Vonage router (which one, by the way?). Then you need to set up the computer to get its IP dynamically (DHCP), which should match the default setup of the LAN side of the Vonage router.

My Vonage modem is a Motorola VT1005V

All we did was hook up a DSL Modem to the incoming phone line then out to my computer. No changes were made on my computer.

Any other info that would help?

Steve48, I'm not a newbie, but definately could use more specific help with your idea if you have the time. I'd really be grateful.

Thanks,
Curt

What Steve is saying is that you need to move whatever settings are on your computer onto the WAN/Internet side of your VT1005. Then set your computer back to vanilla DHCP so it gets an address from the VT1005. If you say that you made no changes at all to your computer, this may not be the problem though.

There are several other things that come to mind on this situation. First of which would be that you may have settings from your old connection still configured in your VT1005. The first thing that I would do is to plug my computer into the VT1005, power it up and browse to 192.168.102.1/admin.html in Internet Explorer and click on the factory reset button. After resetting power down the modem and VT1005. Plug in the modem then once it is fully booted up plug in the VT1005. This is the most likely problem/solution.

(Only do this if resetting the router fails to resolve the problem)
If this does not work, the DSL modem may lock to a certain MAC address, and since your computer was the first device plugged in this would be the MAC address it was looking for. There are two ways to alleviate this situation. Unplug the DSL modem until it loses its residual charge and forgets the MAC address(usually 30mins to 1hr). Second, you can log into the router at 192.168.102.1 and go to the advanced setup tab. At the bottom there is an area to override the MAC address the VT1005 is broadcasting to the DSL modem, just fill this in with the MAC address of your computer. You can obtain the MAC of your computer by going to Start->Run->cmd and typing ipconfig /all. The MAC address will be listed under physical address.

Hey xcrunxc,

Thanks for the detailed ideas, really nice of you. I tried the first one, rebooting the modem and repowering up and it didn't work. So I will try the second idea you had later today when I can spare an hour of computer time.

If there are any other guesses, I'd love to hear em.

Thank you again!

Hey guys,

I tried the detailed instructions from xcrunx, but no luck on any of those ideas.

I have to add, that I was on vacation in southern italy a while back and tried to connect Vonage to a Telecom Italia (Alice) connection and had the same issues.

Could Telecom Italia be blocking Vonage?

Any other ideas? Steve, did xcruncx's idea explain what you were talking about, or did you mean something else?

Thanks guys, really appreciated.

Curt

Go to control panel and then network connections. Tell me everything that you have listed on that screen. I still have a sneaking suspicion that even though you do not remember setting up something on your computer you might have PPPoE enabled.

The first paragraph of Xcrunxc's response correctly explained what I was talking about. The fact that neither you nor anyone else (?) changed your computer setup when you went from the old service to the new, and that it would connect to either without a problem means that my idea about your situation was wrong.

Since you are able to log on to the admin page of the VT1005, I would suggest that you look at it carefully and verify that the WAN settings on the VT1005 match the network settings on your computer. Since you've gone through a reset, that should be the case, but you never know. Other than that, I can't think of any other suggestions.

I posted a screenshot as I went into the network settings.

I went to network settings of the local area connection, then the next screen into the TCP/IP properties, then from there into advanced.

network settings here

Another thing that might help. I was on vacation and plugged into Telecom Alice in Southern Italy, the same problem, Vonage modem wouldn't work in the loop (either would the internet connection.) and this was during the time I was using Vonage in Rome at my other apartment with Fastweb.

So to summarize: Vonage worked in Rome with Fastweb, went on vacation and plugged into Telecom Italia, it didn't work. I came back to Rome, and it worked again perfectly on Fastweb.

Let me know what else I can get a shot of, if this didn't do it.

Thank you for your continued help!!
