PostPosted: Wed Sep 27, 2006 4:40 pm    Post subject: Hardwiring 2 phones works, 1 does not, what can be wrong? Reply with quote Back to top

Ok Here is my Dilemma. I have Vonage hardwired in my house for 2 phones the one into the PA and one in the back of the house thru the house wiring. What I can not get to work is the Phone I want to use in my Kitchen. I have the wiring in Place and when I plug the Vonage into the working phone jack to fire my other phone in the back of the house the Kitchen phone will not work. I am using a standard Wired phone with everything wired in daisychain fashion from the main jack in the front of the house. I am wondering if the Jack I am using in the kitchen may be faulty? or maybe the way i am wired is worng....Wiring goes from Jack,(what I will call the Vonage jack), in Living room DIRECTLY to jack in Back of house. Another twisted pair comes off the Vonage jack and wiring goes down thru the wall 2 stories to the basement and runs along the basement cieling back up the wall in the kitchen to the Kitchen jack.....Phone in Back of house works GREAT but Kitchen phone is dead....Any Ideas??? Thanks.

Did you have regular land line service before you got Vonage? If so, did all the jacks work then, including the one in the kitchen? If you open the three jack boxes- the Vonage jack, the kitchen jack, and the back of the house jack- and look at the wiring, what do you see? What colors are the various wires and how are they connected together?

Yes I dod have POTS service before the Vonage. All jacks worked. all wires connected in all jacks are RED And GREEN. The BLACK and YELLOW are not connected and in all jacks are cut....i have connected READ AND GREEN in Basment and wiried everything accordingly....I am wondering if my wiring may have a "short" in it somewhere between the Vonage jack and the Jack in the Kitchen or if the Jack in the kitchen may be bad......

Let me get this straight:

Vonage Jack --> Back of the house jack

Vonage Jack --> kitchen jack

This is the diagram I get if I follow your words in your first post.

Is this true? If it is, then first of all, it is not daisy chained, it's actually a homerun pattern with your Vonage jack being the home plate.

Now, my question is as follows: Are the two sets of red and green in your Vonage jack also connected to the same set of terminals or did you connect them to a different sent of terminals?

Normally, a jack will have 4-6 terminals (screws) and if you want all 3 jacks to share the same line, the red going to the back of the house and the red wire going to the kitchen must be on the same terminal (screw). Likewise, the same must be true for the green.

If you connect the red going to the back to one screw and connect the red going to the kitchen to another screw, then you have problems. Perhaps a picture of your Vonage jack might be useful.

that's all I can think of, that is you somehow never connected the red/green going to your kitchen to the correct terminals.

And your wiring does not have a short. If it did, neither of the jacks would work. More likely you have an open in the wiring to the jack that doesn't work.

Yes that is right Vonage jack to Back of house AND Vonage jack to the kitchen....Red and green wires are used on all jacks (Vonage Jack, back of house jack, Kitchen jack...) I believe there MUST be a short somewhere in the lines be Vonage Jack and Kitchen Jack...Other Jack works fine...Looks Like I have so rewiring to do to get the Kitchen jack to work..A project that will have to wait guess...

It's somewhat unlikely that there is actually anything wrong with the wiring in its run from the Vonage jack to the kitchen. Open the Vonage jack and check once again to be sure that the red wires going to the back of the house and to the kitchen are both connected together and both connected to the Vonage jack. Likewise the green. Then open the kitchen jack and make sure that it's wired exactly like the jack in the back of the house.

Naturally you should also check the obvious- but often overlooked. Make sure the phone in the kitchen and the cord between the phone and the wall are both good.
