PostPosted: Mon Sep 25, 2006 1:33 am    Post subject: Massive Speed decrease when PAP2 is on. Reply with quote Back to top

I just got a new PAP2 today and love the service i'm getting... however.

While it is plugged in and on I get ~ 2mpbs download speeds.. when it is off like it is now I get:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Download Connection is:: 15106 Kbps about 15.11 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)
Download Speed is:: 1844 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (Server 2)
Test Time:: 2006/09/24 - 11:25pm
Bottom Line:: 263X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 0.56 sec
Tested from a 12160 kB file and took 6.594 seconds to complete
Download Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 157.78 % faster than the average for host (midco.net)
D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-DNEQ3Y1P7
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 [!]

Obviously thats a bit of a change. I normally average between 15 and 20 Mbps download, ~2000kB/s or 15000kbps.

I have cable internet with an IPCOP based router.
It goes MODEM->IPCOP->Switch->PAP2

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 5259696 bps
Upload speed: 735840 bps
Quality of service: 58 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 75 ms
Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 74 ms
Average round trip time to server: 237 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 5.5 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 9.8 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 12
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

Sub-Question: Why is my QoS 58%?! <-- Answered this myself via the search feature... thanks, but this tester seems to put out a bit of rubbish... I haven't seen speeds below 13mbps down or below 1.3mpbs up until i plugged this peice of hardware into my network..

Advertised speeds on my connection are
un-throttled down /1.5mbps up
I do multiple things on the connection, including hosting a website and CS:S server, but have dedicated 150kpbs upload to Vonage, and only have one line. Call quality is fine, even when downloading large files, the internet just slows to a crawl (2mbps) when the adapter is plugged in...

Any insight?

Please tell us more about your network. You have a router and a switch? How are things put together?

Cable modem in to red interface on ipcop box, from ip cop box green interface to switch. PC's etc (including PAP2) plugged into switch.. does that help?

EDIT: here's a network diagram:

Yes, that helps. I gather the IP Cop has only one LAN port? That is, it isn't a router with multiple LAN ports? If it does have multiple LAN ports, I'd plug the PAP2 into a separate port from the switch. If it doesn't, I'd consider replacing the switch with a router.

The IP Cop box is a custom PC Based router, there is not a second GREEN nic in it, but then again it would be rather pointless as the connection to the switch is 1000mpbs (plenty of bandwidth). The Voip box is plugged into the switch directly, no bandwidth/packet loss. I certainly don't see how replacing the switch with a "router" would help, I have a wonderfully functional router with QOS abilities in my IP Cop box. The switch is a Cisco full gigabit switch, certainly not the issue..

It sounds like you've eliminated all the possibilities except the PAP2 itself.

If you have a cooperative friend with broadband service and a home LAN, it might be instructive to plug the PAP2 into his/her network and see if it affects his speeds the same way that it affects yours.

Speaking of QOS, I don't know IP Cop from adam and this is a complete shot in the dark but have you checked to see if that is what is throttling your connection once the PAP2 is connected? Is there a way you can temporarily disable that feature to test the theory?

I'm actually using the QoS Controls (Packetshaping) to ensure that I reserve 128kbps of upload bandwidth for Voip. I don't static limit this, It simply has highest priority, so when Voip is used it will have the bandwidth needed. I've already disabled it to check, but it seems to be fully functional.

thanks for the effor though-!

Running IPCop 4.11 here w/multiple Voip adapters (a few PAP-2's, an RTP300, and just started to play with a PAP2 v2) and even have Asterisk running on the same network and no issues whatsoever. I've mostly replaced every WRT54GS I have with an IPCop box now.

Which version of the PAP2 do you have? (blue lights or green lights)

Also, what brand/model is the switch?

I'm willing to bet it's your switch, here's why:
You're running gigE or 100-base-tx for everything...except the PAP2 which is just 10-Base-T. My guess/bet is that the switch has to slow to down accomodate the 10-Base-T connection.

Suggestion: Try moving all of your computers to ports 8-16 and put the PAP2 up on Port #1... Switch architecture often has separate circuits for the higher # ports & lower # ports.

Thanks for the first bit of sensible advice...

the switch is a cisco catalyst series... the pap2 is the blue light version.. I segmented it out by putting the PaP2 on a switch by itself and uplinking the two switches together.. Everything works fine but the speed still fluctuates wildly. So I'm going to rule out my switch.. Keep looking I guess.
