I think you are misunderstanding VonageTPA's advice. What he is saying is that your PAP2 has a very limited speed and it could be causing your entire switch to "downshift" from its Gigabit speed to a 10 baseT speed.

He was suggesting that you place the PAP2 in an lower port while moving the other computers into higher ports.

another way to test is to remove everything and leave only 1 computer and the PAP2 and see if the speed is still very slow when you are on the phone. Then you will know that there is a speed configuration issue.

You might want to see if the cisco's user's guide has a way to configure it to run at full speed in all the ports except one or something like that.

Thank you for the reply

I didn't misunderstood the advice, I simply circumvented it with a more effiecent manner. Since the uplink between the two switches is a 1000 link, switch 1 is running every port at 1000mbps or 100mpbs, which, PS, you can have varying link speeds and not slow ports next to it down on 90% of decent switches. So, the entire first switch is runing at 1gpbs, while switch 2 is 1gbps to switch one and 10mpbs to the PAP2.

Thanks for the first bit of sensible advice...

the switch is a cisco catalyst series... the pap2 is the blue light version.. I segmented it out by putting the PaP2 on a switch by itself and uplinking the two switches together.. Do you have any non-Cisco switches laying around by chance? I remember yanking a Catalyst 1900 switch awhile back because I was getting a boatload of dropped packets with my Voip calls and wrote it off as the switching being well past its prime / possible lightning damage and tossed an SMC in there to carry the load. I might have to go digging through the parts bin next time I'm down there and see if I can find that old switch. Maybe it just didn't like the high volume of packets coming from the PAP2.

What version of IPCop & add-ons are you using with it? What sort of NICs, RAM, HDD, and CPU do you have on that box?

These are all brand new switches, I have serious issues believing they are the culprit, but I do have some 3com hardware lying about I could throw in... I'm running version 4.11 on a dual P3 1ghz with 512mb ram both nic's are intel pro 1000 series.. I'll check the switch after a trip to the closet to find a doner switch.

Hmm.. given your setup, I'm really doubting that it's your equipment as well. Anything's possible, but it's certainly looking less likely.

Does the network come to a crawl with the PAP2 just plugged in OR only when it's actively engaged in a call?

As soon as you plug it in it bandwidth plummits.. give it two hours and it'll be fairly normal.. a few more hours and it's 2mbps again.. it's as if it cycles... I'm having my ISP come out and check equipment on their end today.. I've got my 3com switches ready to try, but i hate to take my servers down for too long, so I'm going to hold off under the assumption it is my ISP...

Definitely please post what the final result is. The equipment you're using is top notch and shouldn't have any trouble with this... but the famous last words come up, "shouludn't have any trouble." Considering I have 4 separate IPCop installations going with Voip, I highly doubt it's that...but you've got a good one -- you've pretty much stumpted me on this one if it's not the switch.

any updates on this one? You've got me curious... and somewhat worried, as I'll be deploying a full 20 station Voip PBX this weekend. Believe it or not, we're doing this as a temporary PBX for an event, and Voip has made the usually-impractical become totally practical and easy.
