Location: Hyderabad, India
ISP: BSNL, DSL
Download speed: 104824 bps
Upload speed: 180440 bps
Modem: D-Link ADSL 2+ Router (GLB-502T)
Router: Linksys WRT54G
Vonage Adapter: Linksys PAP2
Setup: DSL-->Modem-->Router--->Vonage Adapter & PC

Issue: Only outgoing calls are not going through. Incoming calls are working and call quality is fine. I'm also getting dial tone. But outgoing calls fail. when I dial any number, I start getting engaged tone and outgoing calls don't go through. Mine is a new setup and this is happening from day 1. I have reset all the units many times over last couple of days but there is no improvement.

I've tried connecting 3 different phones to Vonage adapter - issue persists with each of those.

What I think is going on is that b/c you have 2 routers, GLB-502T and the WRT54G, when you make a call, it is not being routed properly and it gets rejected. Would it be possible to have it set up as follows:

DSL -> Modem/Router (GLB-502T) -> PAP2 and see if all calls (i.e. incoming and outgoing) work?

By eliminating the wrt54g from the setup, you might get the outgoing to work.

Why do you need the wrt54g, is it purely for wireless connectivity? If so, you can connect both the wrt54g and the PAP2 into the GLB-502T instead of connecting the PAP2 into the wrt54g.

In other words, I think the 2 routers in front of the PAP2 is causing the problem for you and unless you reconfigure it, you will continue to have issues. It's not your phone that is the problem.

Agreed. Also, you have some horrendous pauses and turn-around times. Please plug your computer into the primary router and re-run the test.

If the 3 phones are all 2.4 GHz cordless phones, please try with a simple corded one.

D-Link GLB-502T has only one Ethernet/LAN port. So I need WRT54G to be able to connect to PC and Vonage adapter at the same time. I can't test by plugging Vonage adapter directly to GLB-502T cuz I need to type in the username and pwd through PC to start my DSL connection. So a router is needed for this setup to work.

I have also connected corded phone to Vonage adapter but still getting engaged tone.

I tried Port Forwarding as indicated on Vonage website (disable DHCP, Assign Static IP, Port forward 5060,5061,53,10000-20000). It did not help. Am getting incoming calls but outgoing is not working at all.

I've also tried this set up at my friend's place: with DSL Modem - Router (Netgear) - PC & Vonage. Both incoming and outgoing worked fine in that case. So I believe something is wrong in my network at home.

My network:

D-Link GLB-502T Modem IP: 192.168.1.1

LinkSys WRT54G Router IP: 192.168.2.1
(Default of 1.1 was changed to 2.1 due to conflict with Modem's IP. Ports 5060,5061 etc fwded to 192.168.2.160)

Vonage Adapter IP: 192.168.2.160 (static IP, DHCP disabled)

PC's IP: DHCP enabled, obtain IP address automatically (it assigned 192.168.2.102 now)


Is there any potential network problem here? What else can I change to make this work? (Though the speed test says the QoS is bad, my incoming calls are fine and clear. And this setup worked at my friend's place with similar connection. So its not the DSL...it must be my network.....)

make sure that you are using a phone which has tone mode. Because Vonage won't work with pulse mode. Most of the phones have the option to change tone/pulse option. So please check that.

Amazing Idea ....peter2006, thank you very much. Per your advice, I changed the phone setting from Pulse to Tone dialing and it worked like a charm Lol

It is kinda goofy that I spent almost 20 hrs over the last one week tweaking my whole network to solve this issue - while all it needed was just the flip of a switch on my phone Eek

I will roll back all the port fwding and static IP settings i've made to see if this will still work (I'm guessing it will - as it worked at my friend's place )

Wonder why this "critical" point (critical cuz it completely blocks outgoing calls) is not mentioned in the PAP2 User Guide!

Thanks everyone and will post updates if anything new comes up. (I already see that I can't browse the net while I'm on Vonage call - guess its just cuz of poor bandwidth of DataOne DSL.)
