I'll be traveling to Canada next week and would like to take my PAP2 w/ me. The hotel I'm staying at has wireless internet access in the rooms. I've done some searching on the forums and found that I should be able to hook my laptop up to the internet using the wireless connection, hook up the PAP2 to the ethernet connection on my laptop and bridge the two connections.

I figured I would try it out at home w/ my wireless connection to see if I could get it figured out before I leave on my trip. So I got it all hooked up to the laptop, bridged the connections, but on the PAP2 the power light and ethernet lights are on and solid, but I can't get the Phone 1 line to come on.

On the PAP2 DHCP is enabled and it's setting an IP address. Maybe it's something to do with my router, I'm just not sure and don't know what else to do. My router's IP address is 192.168.15.1. The IP address of the laptop connected to the router is 192.168.15.127. When I check the PAP2 settings the IP address it is setting itself to is 192.168.0.159 and it says the Static Gateway address is 192.168.0.1.

Now if I hook it back up to my router it works just fine. Any help would truly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Did you bridge the connections or enable Internet Connection Sharing? If you bridged them as your post says, this will not work. Remove the bridge and enable ICS on your wireless connection. You may need to go into settings under ICS and forward the ports Vonage uses to your shared connection.

Ports used by Vonage Adapters

The following ports are needed for OUTGOING Internet communications from the Vonage device to the Vonage servers.

DNS: Port 53 UDP

TFTP: Port 21, 69, 2400 UDP

HTTP: Port 80 UDP

NTP: Port 123 UDP

SIP: Port 5060 - 5061 UDP (used for older Vonage devices provisioned before 2005)

The following ports are needed for INCOMING and OUTGOING Internet communications from and to Vonage devices and servers.

RTP (Voice) Traffic: Ports 10000-20000 UDP. When a call is made, a random port between 10000 and 20000 is used for RTP (Voice) traffic. If any of these ports are blocked, you may experience one way or no audio.

At first I had them bridged and I thought it still was, but I went back and checked and ICS is turned on and they are not bridged. I opened up the ports you listed except I couldn't figure out how to do a range of ports i.e. Ports 10000-20000 UDP. When I try to enter the "-" it says Unacceptable character - you can only type a number here.

Would it just be easier to buy a Wireless Access Point?

I would say so. It would also make it easy to use your phone without having to leave your computer running all the time. It sounds like a worthwhile investment to me, especially if you plan to do this very often.

Last night after more researching I read that it's possible to use a wireless game adapter as a bridge. I remembered I had one in the closet, so I got it out to give it a try. Still I could not get that to work. The power and ethernet lights were solid, but still no phone light. Today I thought I would shutoff the WEP security on my router and whaddya know, it actually worked.

I am so happy. I was getting really frustrated last night. Now I just hope I can get that same setup to work in the hotel. Very Happy .

Thanks for your suggestions.

Glad you got it working with the WiFi Adapter. I don't mean to be a downer, but more than likely you will not be able to use this setup in your hotel, especially if it is a hotel of any size. Larger hotels traditionally block Voip service via port numbers for obvious reasons (they want you to use their overpriced phone service)

Good luck though, and let us know how it turns out.

I've returned from my wonderful trip to Canada and wanted to give you an update. We stayed at the Quality Resort Chateau in Canmore, AB. I brought my PAP2 & Linksys wireless game adapter. Once I got the game adapter configured to the hotels wireless network, it worked like a charm. Didn't have any problems with it all.

Thanks all the help.
