I've been a Vonage customer for a while now. The service is competitive and features good with my Uniden phone. I would now like to use my PC as my calling center but unclear on a few basic things and appreciate your help.

(1) What is the difference between Softphone and VPhone from Vonage? Why is there even more than one software to effectively do the same thing?

(2) I'm about to get the V-phone USB device in order to get a free copy of Softphone. I intend to register my current home line to use this device (Vonage says that's fine). Question ? Why does Vionage not make Softphone available for free or a nominal download charge and allow you to use ANY headset, like a Bluetooth headset? IMHO, they are likely alienating customers and driving them to Skype.

(3) Has anyone used a bluetooth headset with Softphone? I'm afraid this software is proprietary and would only work with Vonage hardware (like the USB Vphone device)

Thank you in advance.

V-phone is a device which serves as a flask drive;has a storage of 250MB;its preloaded with the Vonage talk software;Detachable Stereo Earpiece Microphone;it can turn ANY PC/laptop into a totally functional telephone;while Vonage SoftPhone is a screen-based interface that works just like your telephone keypad.

V-phone has Vonage software pre-loaded. Nothing to install on the V-phone or PC.

Don't buy Vphone to get "free" software. Vonage has XTen free online and SJLabs is also free and a good softphone.

A Vonage softphone line has a monthly charge, but the software is free. The software will not work with your main account number, but with the softphone add-on.

Save some bucks; get a softphone line and use the free software. The only reason I can see for using VPhone is if you use public PCs and then the pre-loaded software *may* be useful.

I use softphone exclusively at home, and send the *box* on the road with an employee. Sound quality and functionality is excellent and using a digital handset (CyberPhoneK) places no load on PC resources. (Bypasses onboard sound circuits). Softphone will only run from a single location, so when traveling, merely make sure the home location is turned off, then log in from anywhere you have wifi. When traveling, I use a Plantronics noise-cancelling earbud/boom mike with superb quality sound.

For a free Vonage softphone, see the features page. You will still need a softphone account to make it work. SJLabs softphone is also free and I prefer it to the XTen , but they both function well.

Once you sign up for softphone, the softphone password (not your main password) is found on the set-up page for the softphone and is required to make the softphone work.

I *presume* the Vphone will also require a softphone password (softphone add-on) to be functional. I may be wrong (??)

No. The V-Phone has a MAC address, just like an ATA.
