voice quality and bandwidth....

My office (3 connected employees) shares it's DSL network with my landlord whose business is in the same building employees.

My landlord who is in the Mortgage Refinancing Business as well as operating a Tax Service, recently expanded his business from 4 to 8 employees - all of whom predominately use desktops connected to the same DSL my staff uses (3 employees).

I signed up for Vonage a couple of months back and have patched the V-line through our resident PBX - and up until recently it has been great. However, lately whenever using this line we frequently get bad sound quality such as gaps of silence and crackling noises in the middle of, at times, important business conversations. These problems seem to be prevalent during the busy times of the day when both offices are at full operation. Of course, I am sure that these problems are directly related to the reduction of bandwidth due to the in-house, shared use of the same DSL/Network. Consequently, I am considering getting our own, separate, in-house Network/Internet service and am comtemplating the advantages/disadvantages of Bellsouth DSL vs Comcast Non-Cable Internet.

I ran an online bandwidth test available through our local DSL provider and found that currently our DSL is downloading @ 807.2 Kbps with a download capability of 100.9 Kb/sec. The local Comcast Non-Cable Internet advertises an available 6000 Kbps but an up stream of 384 Kbps.

Can anyone comment or make suggestions on my dilema?

What were you trying to say here? Clearly, your download capability can't be less than the speed you're actually getting.

As far as chosing between two services, I'd have a hard discussion with each about what they offer as typical and what they guarantee. All too many ISPs give only typical numbers with no guaranteed performance. That just won't cut it when your business depends on it. You need 90 kbps up and down for good Voip service. Make sure you're going to get at least that for each of your phone lines plus enough to accommodate all of your internet activities.

Steve48 is right, attempting to compare a measured download speed on an active network with a published download speed is invalid.

In the general case DSL is generally going to provide the advertised speed. Your cable system will be dependent on how much other traffic is generated in your neighborhood. In this respect it much more closely reflects the problems you have currently with your shared DSL line though certainly on a much bigger scale.

It appears that you are only talking about a single Vonage line at this time. In that case either solution would probably provide adequate bandwidth and you should base your decision on price and quality of service. Broadband reports can sometimes help with this information specific to your area. Look for speed test results based on your zip code.

In the meantime you might have better calls if you set your bandwidth saver to a lower value. The actual voice quality might be slightly degraded but it may be subject to fewer interruptions and drop outs.
