Okay, I've done some research on this board (looking up information and whatnot) and I've come to the conclusion that the RTP300 does not do a good job of managing QoS...or at least, has no option for managing QoS in terms of "voice." In addition, it seems that the Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster is a favorite to increase call quality.

My questions are as follows:

1. With the RTP300, would I benefit from turning OFF the QoS? My audio quality is extremely choppy on MY end as it is, with QoS on. I can't manage it on the RTP300, so would turning it off do any good, or would it just make matters worse/stay the same?

2. The Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster...that boosts upload traffic abilities, right? If it doesn't, then I must've misunderstood something, but the general idea is that it doesn't do a whole lot for the downloading end of the spectrum. Once again, while on Vonage and making a call, more often than not, the other party can hear me just fine; however, I can't hear them clearly. The sound becomes garbled and the audio drops, and sometimes the entire call just disconnects. Now because I have difficultly hearing the audio clearly on MY end, is that an upload or a download issue? Would the HBB1 help me at all?

3. What can I do to get better audio quality? My ISP tells me they "do not officially support Voip technology" while Vonage tells me to "contact my ISP." I've reduced my setting down to 30kbps on the Bandwidth Saver, and I've already performed the speed test here in this thread, so if anyone wants to view that, they can.

So basically, that's it. I really like all of the features I get with Vonage, and I love the service in theory. But a phone that gives me audio quality so poor I can barely make out what the other party is saying, is just not worth the aggrevation. I'd rather not go to AT&T and spend at least twice as much for the same amount of phone service, but if I can't use Vonage to talk on, what good is it?

I have an HBB1, and you are correct it's only for upload issues not download. It gets rid of problems where the caller cannot hear you. Without it I would drop out once in awhile and they couldn't hear me and then I would magically come back. That's all gone with the HBB1.

If you can't hear callers very well there is nothing you can do yourself to tune this. I have the bandwidth saver set to "normal" 30kbps and calls sound a bit choppy. I'm never sure how to set this. Lower settings seem more reliable in general, but I think the sound quality suffers as the callers are a bit choppy because it seems to send me less data to recreate the callers voice.

In fact, I can sometimes hear the choppy sound when I'm in a call and I put some stress on my connection by downloading a big file. It's almost like I can "hear" the bits of the file being downloaded.
I also use skype a lot and I can download like crazy and I never hear any different in the sound of the call quality. This is the main issue I'm trying to improve with Vonage, I'm quite happy about everything else.

Your best bet is to call support and explain this. They have secret knobs they can tweak that may help. I have only called a couple of times and find the support is always very good as long as I come with a very specific issue.
