PostPosted: Tue Sep 19, 2006 7:05 pm    Post subject: Poor speed and consistant choppy audio Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,

Although I've had Vonage since January of 2006, I'm new here. My audio quality is just terrible. I've called up tech support and they ran me through the general routine. Basically, it amounted to me lowering my setting on the Bandwidth Saver option to its lowest setting (30 kbps, I believe) and that still hasn't helped. It's mostly a crapshoot. Some days, it's okay; other days, the audio quality is so bad, I can't hear a thing the other party is saying, it's all garbled up. Oddly enough, they can hear everything I'm saying. There's no problem there at all.

I've looked over these forums a bit, and I decided to run that speed test. Here's what I got from it:

SPEED TEST STATS
Download speed: 245,248 bps
Upload speed: 127,184 bps
Quality of Service: 63%
Download test type: Socket
Upload test type: Socket
Maximum download pause: 349 ms
Average download pause: 62 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 45 ms
Average round trip time to server: 51 ms

Voip STATS
Jitter: You--> Server: 4.5 ms
Jitter: Server--> You: 10.9 ms
Packet loss: You--> Server: 0.0%
Packet loss: Server-->You: 0.0%
Packet discards: 0.0%
Packet out of order: 0.0%
Number of supported Voip lines: 1
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I don't have Cable Modem or DSL; I have (supposedly) Ethernet. I'm currently in college and I live in an apartment complex that supplies all of its people with high-speed Internet access. The name of this company is Pavlov Media (formerly Fusion Broadband) and to be honest, they suck. I could go into all the details about why and how they suck, but the most important of the ways is that they consistantly show up slow on speed tests. Ethernet is supposed to be fast, right? Howcome then, when I do a speed test, I get such miserable download/upload results? The worst part about it is I can't go with anyone else so long as I live here--I think the apartment complex has signed an agreement with Pavlov Media to only use them.

So what do I do? I'd like to continue using Vonage, as I like the features of the service (I also call to Canada practically everyday), so to get all of these features and long-distance calling abilities, it'd cost a small fortune with AT&T or something similar.

Any advice and/or help would be handy. Thanks ahead of time. Smile

Unfortunately, good Voip phone service is utterly dependent on a good internet service, and I suspect (as I 'm sure you do) that the problem is there.

What is your network setup and which Vonage adapter do you have? Please run a comparison Voip test at www.testyourvoip.com. Then disconnect any network equipment, including the Vonage box, plug your computer directly into the service, and repeat the test.

Yes, I have a strong feeling that, ultimately, the culprit is my less-than-stellar so-called "high-speed Internet" service. Rolling Eyes

I can (and did) do a comparison Voip test at that website you specified. However, I cannot do one and disconnect my network equipment. You see, Pavlov Media requires that you register your MAC address through them. Since I'm using the RTP300-VD router that came with my Vonage setup, I had to register the router's MAC address. If I were to disconnect from the router and directly connect from the wall socket to my computer, I wouldn't be able to get online, so checking this test wouldn't be possible, nor would I be able to do anything else online as well.

Anyway, here are the test results you requested:

Actually, except for latencies, your numbers aren't too bad. I suspect that your phone would have been having one of its "good" periods when you took this data. If you can, try to run a test or two when the phone is acting up. Unfortunately, I still suspect that it's you ISP, and there's nothing you can do about that.
