PostPosted: Sat Sep 16, 2006 10:22 pm    Post subject: How much bandwidth? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

Just about ready to sign up with Vonage, but have a technical question that the sales rep didn't understand and couldn't answer.

I have "unlimited" service with my cable company, however, their definition of "unlimited" usage is 40gb of bandwidth usage total (upstream & downstream combined).

I use about 2000 minutes of telephone time per month.

Does anyone know how much bandwidth Vonage uses per minute or how much bandwidth would be used for 2000 minutes of talk time?

If I go over 40gb, they will start charging me, so I really need to know before I order it because obviously if I start getting hit with bandwidth overages from the cable company, I wouldn't really be saving money by switching.

Thanks, in advance! Very Happy

It all depends on how your phone adapter is configured. Assuming the standard 64Kbps (G.711) Audio + 22Kbps Header (20ms sample time).

You will be using 86Kbps... at 2000 minutes = 10,320,000 Kb bandwidth per month. Or roughly 10 Gigabytes. I think...

That is also about the maximum bandwidth settings you can use. You could easily cut that in half or more.

Edit: Actually that only accounts for Audio in one direction. If my numbers are right you would have to double them. Probably using the bandwidth saver would be a good idea.

You forgot to convert from bits to bytes I believe. At least most traffic would be measured in gigabytes not gigabits which is what you calculated for.

10320000kb / 8= 1290000 KB
1290000KB / 1024 = 1259.765625 MB
1259.765625MB /1024 = 1.2302398681640625GB

So with upstream and downstream that would be ~2.5GB/month.

Wendy, just out of curiosity, what service are you using? We see occasional inquiries about services in India with download limits of 1 GB, but this is the first time I've seen an inquiry about a 10 GB limit.

Hi Steve!

I have a 40gb limit, not 10gb! I'm with PTD.net (PennTel Data) in Northeast PA, and they suck! LOL

Was living in NY and using Optonline, so anything else is pale in comparison Cry

I'm still not sure what the answer is! As you can see from the above answers, they are completely different?? So, still confused here.

However, after reading HORRIBLE reviews about Vonage Customer Service, I'm afraid to switch now. Cry

Thanks for the information- my mistake about the 40. That's so much that I'm surprised they even bother with a limit.

The answers you got were pretty much the same, except that Dbarkeep forgot to divide by 8. Xcrunxc corrected it. You'll use around 2.5 GB/month for the voice traffic you've described.

It's true that Vonage customer service can be trying at times, but most of us don't need CS all that much. If the service works well for you, then it provides great savings, and it's relatively hassle free for most people. I would certainly run the forum Voip test and a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com using your internet service before making a commitment. Voip is utterly dependent on a good internet service, and neither Vonage nor anyone else can change that. One strategy is to sign up for a one month trial without porting your existing number (assuming that's something you eventually want to do). See how it goes.

Yes you would only use about 2.5Gigs per month of you alloted 40Gigs., and that will go up and down (not by much) depending on how much you use the phone. I would not worry about going over your 40Gigs., you would have to do alot and I mean ALOT of talking to max out.

wendy444: I've had Vonage for 2 years using PTD and never had a problem with bandwidth. I don't use that many minutes, but PTD is pretty good.

Thanks so much for the replies. I called my cable company today, Service Electric and they told me I'm not "allowed" to use Vonage on their system! But I'm not too sure they know what they're talking about.

My biggest concern in the customer service from Vonage. I've read review after review after review that all say to run as fast as you can away from Vonage, so I'm still sitting on the fence.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of customer service are you thinking you are going to need from Vonage? Your entire account is accessible online, you can change all of your account info online including your phone number. You can even dispute charges on calls online. Vonage has made it so that you shouldn't have to contact them unless you want to cancel or your router is dead. I think you will also find enough information on this forum to get past the first of Tech Support in India if needed, and get to someone in New Jersey who actually knows what they are doing.
