I want to use Vonage with all my home phones so I opened the Network Interface Unit (NIU) on the outside of the house and disconnected the telephone jack. I still had a dial tone. I then disconnected the red & green wires from the two terminal blocks. After disconnecting everything ......... I still have a dial tone from Cox Communications. My number will be transferred to Vonage in a few days and I understand there can be damage to the inside equipment if still connected at the NIU.

Hi Stevenhh, I think that your line will be automatically disconnected when the LNP process is completed. Not before that. I think you must disconnect your Dmarc after the number has been ported over to your Vonage line. Anyway, wait for the "experts"... |

Stevenhh, your service from Cox will probably be terminated automatically after the number is ported (but I'd check and be sure), but you must still make sure that you're disconnected from any land lines.
You did the things that are normally done and it didn't work, so you need to find out what's different from normal with your installation. Is Cox an ordinary POTS service where you live, or is it another Voip service? If it's the latter, they probably already disconnected the land lines from your house wiring and tied their equipment in somewhere other than at the NIU. You'll have to find out where. |

Thanks, for the replies. After I posted the message, I went back outside and realized that the box I was working with was probably the one that Verizon used before I signed up with Cox a few years ago but is the same one that another Cox customer showed me several days ago. There is another box above that one, I opened the cover to that one and disconnected the jack and no Cox Communications dial tone. Vonage is working well now on all phones.
Thanks for the reply. Everything looks good now! |
