I just got everything set up a few days ago and everything is working fine, except that there's audible static on the line. It's fairly constant and rather annoying but tolerable I guess. Is this typical of Voip or do I have a defective vta? Anything I could try?

I'm using the d-link vta

I've tried plugging it directly into an outlet and I've tried it in a power strip same noise either way. How likely is it that they'll send me a free replacement?

A gentle background hiss seems to be pretty normal, but objectionable static isn't. Do you have your device plugged into house wiring? If so, undo that and plug a phone directly into the device to see if that makes a difference.

By the way, I don't understand your setup. Since the D-link VTA is not a router, how have you placed it between your modem and your Linksys router?

It's connected to my house wiring now but when I first got it I had it isolated and it sounded exactly the same. It's not very noticeable during a conversation, just a faint crackle when it's quiet. When I first start to dial it's not really a hiss, more of fairly steady crackling noise. Not anything tremendously irritating but I would prefer silence obviously. Wink It's louder than my old qwest line.

I've been reading the forum and tried the "phone off the hook in the second outlet" and it didn't do anything.

My modem and the dlink vta are plugged into the router.

I'd give customer service a call and see if they can make an adjustment.

tips for static lines
1.test using a different phone
2. make sure that all wires are free of damage.
3. try to change the adapter's location. dont put it next to an electronic device.
4. if there is an available phone port, try to switch it. you can call tech support to switch the phone line for you.

I've tried a few different phones, same noise. If I turn the volume down enough on the various receivers it's harder to hear the static though. Rolling Eyes

All the cables are new.

I moved the adapter 4+ feet away from other electronics. Same noise

I could call and get them to switch the account to line two on the dta but I'm doubtful that would do much. I suppose I could try it.
