I am in Jacksonville, FL. I use Clearwire, which is wireless broadband. Typical up / down speeds are 1.3M / 195K. Currently using DLINK VWR router with phone plugged into it. Setup is Modem -> Vonage Adapter -> PC. Audio, especially outgoing is very choppy. I ran the speed test twice, here are the results:

Tried all the tips on the site and have spent HOURS on the phone with tech support. I finally gave up and called today to cancel my service. The rep asked me to try the Hawking Broadband Booster, and said it should fix my problem. I know my primary issue is using the service over wireless broadband, would any of you spend the money to try the booster or give up based on the test results?

Your jitter numbers and pauses are much too high, and you're not getting the speed performance that you quoted as being typical. Plug your computer directly into the modem and re-run the test. If the results aren't substantially better, then the issue is with your internet service provider. Reducing your bandwidth setting may improve things somewhat, but I doubt that you'll ever be happy with Voip service without a better broadband connection.

With your current upload speed which is around 50kpbs as per your speed tests, it is a wonder that you have outgoing voice communication at all. At the lowest possible settings for your Vonage account you would be using 30kbps of upload, and this is not counting any overhead used by your connection and assuming you never use a computer or anything else on your network. Vonage recommends that you are able to sustain 90kpbs of upload for their service alone to work correctly and you simply are not able to do that. I don't think you would see much change with the broadband booster, it may increase your speed a minimal amount but is not going to double your upstream bandwidth, which is basically what you need. It is also not going to get your max pause under 100, and anything extremely over that is going to give you choppy audio, no matter what you do. To put is simply, with your current internet connection Vonage is not worth it for you.

Thanks for the replies, that is what I expected.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know why the speed test results I posted are so much lower than I get on other sites? Are the tests somehow different? For example, here are some tests I just ran, and their results:

Even the other Vonage speed test is higher

Just curious why the tests have such vastly different results.

I just ran a bunch of those tests and all of them come back almost identical to my speed as reported by the test on this site. Maybe you have a bad hop somewhere in between you and the test server, or maybe you are geographically very far away from the server. Either of those would give a lower speed test result and higher latency(max pause).

While your Vonage line will likely never be perfect with those kind of numbers you should be able to get it working reasonably well.

First of all, change your bandwidth saver to 30Kbps, you will not be able to maintain a decent conversation above this. You can also have a Vonage tech support person change your sample time (ptime).

30 ms ptime will lower your bandwidth to the absolute minimum but since your wireless and will likely have some packet loss it may not work the best. 10 ms sample time will account better for packet loss but uses more bandwidth. I would go with to 20ms for now and see how it works

It is not all about the bandwidth. He has latency(max pause) of over 1000ms. With anything over around 120ms you are looking at choppy audio due to loss, with anything over around 200ms you are looking at an actual delay on the line causing dropped audio when the jitter buffer runs out(after 120ms at its highest setting).
