Yeah, as I suspected, my firmware was upgraded back to 1.01.70 last night.

Dumbasses.... I wonder if it's even possible to tell the system not to upgrade me.

Now I gotta call them again.

They have (or at least used to have) a record in a database somewhere that tells their servers what firmware revision you should be on. I think they use this to "stage" out firmware upgrades so they don't get a million devices all trying to do upgrades at once.

During that upgrade process, what may have happened is your device's database entry got reset again. They probably pull some query of a random 10,000 devices that are not on the latest, and set the database records for those devices to the latest so they get upgraded the next time.

If that's the case, then you may have just been picked up by a random upgrade query, and (unfortunately) it may happen repeatedly until the upgrade is complete.

My WRTP54G is still on 1.00.62 as of this morning, but I usually get my upgrades on Sunday evenings, if the pattern holds consistently. So, I expect I'll have my joy on Monday morning. I think I'm near the end of the list, so with any luck the upgrade madness will be done by next week, and your 1.00.62 downgrade will "stick" then. If my theory is correct, that is.

Spent 4 hours last night troubleshooting SMTP mail that wasn't being received. Nothing had changed in my environment and the RTP300 seemed to be working fine. After getting to the point of "check for latest firmware for the router" I ended up here for instructions on how to update it. I found this thread and, sure enough, I'm a victim of the infamous 1.01.07 release.

After a call to tech support to downgrade me back to 1.00.62, the mail started flowing again (lots of spam to delete now). I asked the tech to check the box to ensure that I don't get upgraded again, but he said that the network team does scripted updates to push out the latest firmware. "If you get updated again, call us back."

Sure enough, my router got pooched again last night. This time I got ahold of a guy who either had a cold or just came off the surfboard. He pushed me back down to 1.00.62 and again, the mail began flowing. He gave me the direct number to advanced customer service (732-528-2600) but said that they have no contact with the network team re: when they push out the updates. The guy offered to e-mail me the 1.00.62 firmware update. I asked which ports to block the update process (he said TFTP ports 69, 21, 2400), but he said the RTP300 can't block ports.

It's a darned shame that I'm going to be forced to manually reset the firmware every stinkin' time they push the 1.01.07 one to me. Maybe I'll put their number on speed dial. With enough tickets, someone will figure out there's an issue and fix it.

Edit #1 (4:10pm): A return call to the advanced customer service number resulted in a person transferring me back to technical support services (go figure).

Edit #2 (4:30pm): After some grumbling and thinking, I called tech support back as having me call or manualy back off their firmware release isn't really customer service. All I want is for someone to check a box on their end so the firmware isn't pushed down until it's fixed. The gal I got didn't buy the situation and decided to start by reviewing my network topography. After trip to the KnowledgeBase she returned to get me to set up a DMZ for my mail server. Sounds like someone's been studing for their network exam. Wink

A second trip to the KnowledgeBase returned, "How about we try opening port 110?" Already got it. Time for advanced technical support (20 minutes later). Rolling Eyes At least she gave a valiant effort.

<Insert 17 minutes of hold music and basic troubleshooting tips here as my call is routed back to the US> Must have caught them in a shift change.

I finally reached a poor soul who had to listen to my story (what's the use of 1st level support if they don't transfer my information to them?). It sounded as if he'd heard about the problem before, but needed to check with someone else as to what they're doing with us poor schleps.

After a few minutes, he returned to tell me that this is a known issue and they are working on a new (fixed) firmware release. He offerred to e-mail me the 1.00.62 firmware so I can manually downgrade my router if their nightly script pooches it again over the next few nights, but then put me on hold for another 5 minutes to check something else.

Final resolution => Vonage is sendig me a new Motorola VT2442 device as this device doesn't have the issue.

Total call time: 63 minutes

So I called them and really let them have it today. Poor guy, not his fault, but he refused to pass me on to someone who could satisfy me, so be it.... anyway, good to have that direct number, I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Does anyone have (or can get) the actual 1.00.62 firmware img file? If so, we only need to follow these instructions to do the downgrade ourselves (on a daily basis, unfortunately for the time being):

If you want to downgrade it to 1.00.62 (or any other release you feel like), I have an article on that here (See step 4 in the article):

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/upgrade.html

As you've already seen, Vonage will simply push a new firmware to your router at some point. However, it can save you a call to tech support if they are really busy, and it's an alternative if you need to load the older firmware more quicky without waiting for support.

See my article above ( http://vonage.nmhoy.net/upgrade.html ), I drag out this article every time a new firmware version comes out, or someone ends up having trouble with their WRTP54G (which are famous for not being able to upgrade firmware automatically from some of the really old builds). Wink

The article contains links to several different firmware images for the RTP300 and WRTP54G.

But, you will not be able to get to any "hidden" or "locked" settings using the "tivonpc" password. Sorry. It only buys you the ability to load a new firmware image. Now, that firmware image could, in theory, be a non-Vonage-locked firmware, but then the device wouldn't work with Vonage any more.

This firmware fiasco is incredibly annoying.

I got verson 1.01.7 pushed down to my RTP300 last night and
like everyone else it broke all externa access to my servers.

I called Tech Sp and got downgraded to 00.62 and everything
was fine until today when they pushed out 1.01.7 again!!

I've now been on hold for 27 min with no Tech Sp in sight.. grrr.

One has to wonder what if any testing they do on their major
software releases but what annoys me the most is that are
apparently taking no action now that the problem is well known.

NateHoy,

Thanks again for making the .62 firmware available. I used it to downgrade my RTP300 this morning after AGAIN getting upgraded to 1.01.70 last night.

Worked like a charm, I didn't get any error screens and didn't have to reboot the router nor reset all my settings. It was incredibly easy. I recommend all you guys use those instructions instead of feeling the pain of waiting for their tech support.

That said, Vonage needs to feel the pain otherwise this problem will never be resolved, I plan on emailing support everyday that this idiocy continues.

Use the contact page here on the forum when you send the email (menu, top left, Vonage information/Contact Support). We're told that gets special attention. Let us know how it works out.

Damn... they upgraded me back to 1.01.07 sometime DURING THE DAY today...

I wonder if the downgrade didn't last as long because I did it myself instead of getting a tech to do it?
