Wow, I am getting a 231ms latency on a hop to vonage.com at an ny.alter.net hop. Going to alter.net re-directs me to the Verizon Business website. I think we have our culprit.
Thanks for the sleuthing. What do you think is the best way to deal with this?

Probably an issue with a Verizon gateway in NY. If pings are that high, they should already know about the issue because their monitoring should easily pick that up. Not really to much you can do, just wait until Verizon gets their issue fixed which shouldn't take very long I would hope.
I called Time Warner and had them do a ping/ trace to my modem ( my own linksys, that they always let me know!) They said that everything looked fine from there side. I had to use my Mac to their help desk because my skype was just as bad and cell service in the house is never keeps a signal. After about 10 min. phone works fine. I did 1 week later lowe my bandwidth from highest to lowest and my modem MTU from 1500 to 1825. Echo has all but dropped so far. Calls are better but still too loud. Will have to call them about it. My location is 30 miles west of Albany NY (upstate) Will see how long it lasts!
