A friend of mine that I got onto Vonage is suddenly having an issue with anonymous calls. They are calling at all times and not saying anything but the old breathing crap. Anyway, Vonage (unlike SunRocket) has no way to block anonymous calls.

So I called their customer support. Got a real English speaking person who said they cannot do anything from their end either. I asked if they keep records of the number coming in, even though it is blocked on our end, and they said no. I specifically asked this because if my buddy puts in a police report, could the police get the number from Vonage's call records. They say no.

Anyone out there have a solution other than not picking up the phone when caller ID show anonymous?

Search the forums for suggestions for devices that can be used for handling anonymous calls.

Someone is bound to have a record of the call, probably the CLEC that handles local call termination for the number. I would suspect that Vonage actually does as well but possibly not.

Caller ID information is no longer all that difficult to manipulate so it may not be of much use. Additionally with prepaid phones and cheap calling cards it is often meaningless.

Are you sure it is someone hanging on the phone and breathing and not just dead air? It is common for telemarketer equipment to dial multiple lines at once and only connect the first that answers. Is your friend's number registered on the do not call list?

We're sure it is someone calling (as in a person and not a machine). He has recorded a few of the calls and you can hear house noises in the background. When he threatened to call the police twice, they (he/she) hangs up right away.

You may want to give our software product VONaLink SoloRecord a try. It can read caller ID and reject the call, even when your phone does not display the caller ID.

If the caller dials *67 before your phone number, the caller ID does not display on your analog phone. However, at the network level, the originating phone number may still be present, and VONaLink can read this and reject the call.

VONaLink looks like a great solution - until - I read the user guide. My buddy has the Vonage TA with Router/Hub from Linksys. He is not interested in having to purchase any more equipment plus a $99 license for the software just to add a capability that should be provided by Vonage. If it worked without having to buy more hardware - in other words if it worked with the existing Vonage Router/Hub/TA integrated device, he was ready to buy. Looks great, just won't work for us or so it seems.

No problem. Vonage should provide call blocking as standard.

The primary purpose of SoloRecord is call recording. The call rejection is a secondary feature.

Vonage does not have a record of Anonymous calls at their end. However, their partner CLEC who provides them with the telephone #'s and connections in the area would. If you were to file a Police report and subpoena those records from Vonage, they could get them for you.
