PostPosted: Sun Sep 10, 2006 12:26 am    Post subject: DSL vs Cable hi - speed + Vonage quality ? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello. It's been quite a while since I joined this forum. Now, I am in a position to actually make a purchase. Smile The fact that the price has remained the same and the benefits increased really has me interested. Especially since I have contacts in France and Italy. Smile

Anyway, I currently have Verizon DSL, which has been VERY reliable. My 1 year contract is up so I am free to switch internet providers. Right now, I pay about $50/month for basic, bare bones phone line ($13ish/month) and DSL service ($now about $35ish) all plus taxes.

I don't have cable tv, nor do I want it, so I would have to pay full price for Comcast cable internet which would be about $60/month. I think that I would have to sign a year long contract, though I am not sure. I plan to be out of this building in about 8 months and don't really want to sign a contract if I can get away with it.

Anyway, I am thinking I may want to keep my existing Verizon landline for ($13ish/month) and just use it as 1. backup for power or internet failures and 2. sending and receiving faxes). I don't mind getting a new Vonage number.

Anyway, my question is, will my voice quality on DSL be noticibly poorer than with Comcast cable internet? Does anyone have any experience with Vonage + DSL? Fyi, my current DSL is 3Mbps......the Comcast plan I would have gotten is advertised at 6Mbps.

Thanks.

Overall, cable usually gives a better experience because of its generally higher bandwidth, but the situation you describe certainly seems to favor your existing setup. The main things are that you don't want cable television and the cost of your existing service is low. With all that, I think you're making the right decision in keeping what you have now.

Please post the rest of the details for the forum Voip test, and also run a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston). What you've posted so far sounds good, but let's look a little closer.

as long as you don't have other devices that use the connection, dsl should be fine for making calls

at my house i have a ps2, xbox360, 2 laptops and a desktop that is always downloading something-this set up will not work with Vonage and dsl, well it would but the quaility would be very poor because I already notice the difference if I have 3 devices on at the same time.

I concur with the other posts. It really depends on your needs.

One thing to note, with comcast, you do not have any contracts, I believe this is true for all Cable High Speed Internet. I now have Charter b/c of moving into the St. Louis area and again, I didn't have to sign a contract. In fact, if nothing else, it looks like you will have to sign a contract with Verizon for another year and I'm not sure if you want to pay for the last 4 months without using it at all. Although the math would still favor the DSL since you will be losing $35x4 = $140 where as you would be paying roughly $25/month more for your cable if you go with the regular price.

Do note that with cable, they tend to offer pretty good deals for the first time customer, in my case, I got a 6 months for $19.99/month which would easily save you tons of money compared to DSL. I believe these specials run at various internet stores as well as Circuit City which is where I got mine. I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy and others also offer these specials.

hope this helps.
