Weird happenings (Vonage Tech Support already CC'd).

Since I'm doing local number porting, Vonage gave me a virtual number to use for incoming calls until the port goes through. I tried to call the number from the local exchange (my land line) and it showed up as long distance, so they gave me a new virtual number.

The new virtual number shows up as local from my house, but shows up as invalid/disconnected number (if it's long distance I get a different message). When dialing I receive 3 short tones of increasing pitch followed by a recorded message:

"We're sorry, but the number you dialed is either invalid or disconnected, please check your number and try again"

Talked to Ma' Bell and they (of course) blamed Vonage. Vonage was at a loss for why it wasn't working (apparently because they aren't calling the number locally). The tricky bit is that all works fine if your in a different city, it's just in the local calling area that it shows up as disconnected. As a workaround I tell people in my home city to call me using the first virtual number, and people outside the city to call me using the second.

Truth be known I could care less since these numbers are temporary and should go away when my line ports, but it makes me question if Vonage isn't having trouble allocating numbers in my city.

Anyone experience similar issues with their numbers?

I have not heard of this problem in the past. You neglected to say what exchange or what city?

I believe this a book keeping problem with the exchange rather then Vonage since the number works OK from other exchanges.

Right... I should have followed the template. Here are the stats of my setup (for what it's worth).

I'll start with the pertinent info:
Exchange:
832-220-XXXX owned by Focal Communications Corporation of Texas.

Guess Ma' Bell really does have nothing to do with that one...

Ratecenter:
Cypress, Texas, It's a fairly small rural town, but close enough to Houston to get all the Metro services.

For what it's worth, here's my setup:
TimeWarner RoadRunner->CableModem->VT2442->WiFi Router

I put the VT2442 Closer to the cable so it could QoS my WiFi packets (seems to work, my speed test is in 90's when I'm off the phone and the 70's when I'm on it).

Here's the speed test
Code:
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 4920952 bps
Upload speed: 382192 bps
Quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 26 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 61 ms
Average round trip time to server: 85 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 4.4 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.3 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.1 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I may try to call The exchange owner on Monday, or I may just let it die a quiet death.

I am kinda miffed that they only let you pick State and Area Code instead of specifically specifying a ratecenter or exchange that you want to be on. Texas is big... Damn big. The 832 area code covers MANY ratecenters over a 2,000 square mile area.

They should review their policy as far as virtual number allocations go.

Since when has this been their policy? I was able to pick an area code AND a rate center local to me for my temp virtual number and I just checked and it still gives me the options on area code and rate center right now.

As for your number dialing problem. You can just call and ask them for another number and they should change it quickly for you, and give you one in your correct rate center. The virtual numbers are assigned out of a pool of numbers that are available to them through their CLEC(who just so happens to be Focal also). So, if there is a disconnect message, it is a problem with Focal and if you want to keep your number as it is Vonage should open a ticket with Focal for you to get that resolved since that is their partner carrier/CLEC.

I have noticed that this happens a lot in areas where the major local carrier in the area and the CLEC partnered with Vonage are the same company.

Perhaps it's only this way in my area, but when I go to add a virtual number here's what I get:

State and Area Code, but I agree, when you call them you can ask anything you want.

I'm not going to bug them for a new virtual number, but would like the breakdown between Focal and Vonage fixed. But since (in theory) it's only going to effect me for a few more days, I'll simply leave it out there as fair warning to the next guy. Vonage has the trouble ticket and a link to this thread, so they should figure it out, or at least fine Focal for not living up to whatever contract they have with them.

JavaScript to the rescue. Sorry for the stir, but yes... If you continue with the submission process it gives you rate centers.

Strange that this didn't work when I signed up though.
