PostPosted: Thu Sep 07, 2006 4:03 pm    Post subject: How to connect Vonage adapter directly to cable modem? Reply with quote Back to top

I have Comcast cable. When I try to connect my PAP2 adapter directly to the modem, it cannot connect to the internet (power/internet lights keep blinking). I think this is because Comcast only allows the MAC address from my PC to connect to the internet. Currently, I have my router clone my computer's MAC address, so the router can connect to the modem.

Here is my current setup:

Comcast modem -> D-Link DI-524 router -> PAP2 adapter / PC

Is there a way to force the PAP2 adapter to have my PC MAC address?

Thanks.

As far as I know and I just checked the user's guide for the PAP2, it requires it to sit behind a router and hence it does not have any router capabilities. Even within the voice response menu, it does not list as an option, cloning mac address. I'm sure this is because everything has to be done by phone and it would be a challenge to type in both letters and numbers.

I believe what you are looking to do is not an available option on the PAP2.

You are correct that the mac is probably the problem. I don't believe the Pap2 or Pap2v2 allows for changing the mac; Only confirming. The modem retains the mac in a form of of cache memory, I believe. It can be reset, but I couldn't tell you how. A series of Reboot and Plug/Unplug actions I believe. Somewhere on the boards is a description of how. Which modem do you have?. I will take a look.

Interesting. Comcast here in Colorado doesn't restrict connections behind the cable modem to a certain pre-defined MAC address. The MAC of the cable modem is the defining factor for connectivity to the network. The MAC addresses on devices on the end-user's side of the cable modem shouldn't matter.

yes, you are correct if you do not install with the CD that comes with comcast. If you have it installed with the CD that comes with it, it does recognize that you are connecting different computers to the network so perhaps that's his setup. I know this b/c I have done it with both with and without the CD. When installed without the CD, they only register your MAC for the modem.

Don't forget to cycle power to the modem when you change the device that's connected to it. It is necessary in my expereince.
