PostPosted: Wed Sep 06, 2006 2:27 pm    Post subject: d-link vwr features not working, new firmware release date? Reply with quote Back to top

I've spoken to Vonage about the d-link vwr router I installed last week. I can't get port forwarding working for smtp. The dmz feature is not working and Vonage acknowledges that will be addressed in the next firmware release. The wep or wap wifi settings don't work right so I had to secure wifi access using a password - forgot exactly what pg that was on.

I can't get an eta on the firmware release nor can I get a replacement linksys wifi router. Anyone have an idea on the firmware release date or how I can try it out in advance of the normal release?

I don't think the d-link was really ready for the public... don't know why Vonage would release it when it seems so simple to fix. It looks like this device is running linux - is this correct?

That router is a POS. I sent it back and kept my VTA that I was originally sent. I am using a Linksys WRT54G and VTA now. Much much better.

I have some network webcams that use upnp. I can't seem to get the upnp option to work on my VWR. The cameras worked well with my old d-link router. I didn't know who to call for support. Vonage or D-link?

your're suppose to call Vonage since they provided the hardware. I think they do the programming on the box too, but maybe I'm wrong. If you call Vonage "support" is not what I would call it Very Happy If you give D-link a call let us know what they say.

Vonage only does the programming for the voice part of the firmware on the device I believe, and even then that is using a TI chipset nothing made by Vonage itself. D-Link produces the device and writes the firmware for all of the router functions. Vonage has a list of known issues several pages long with this router, it appears D-Link was asleep while this device was being quality tested on their end. According to knowledgeable sources I have spoken to about this, they state that D-link is working on a firmware fix for all of the known issues, however there currently is no ETR.

As for why it was released early, well thats simple, Vonage ran out of WRTP54G's so it was not able to offer a wireless device for a period of about a week. The all of a sudden came the VWR to replace it, I would imagine that most of the issues are caused by this rush. This would also be why Vonage is not able to replace your device with another wireless router as it truly does not have another one to offer you.

The WRTP54G is a bad bad bad product. So bad that Linksys refuses to support it. So you're stuck with Vonage support, and we all know what this means... Cry
I've had it for 1 month and had to exchange it 3 times (on vonage's customer support's advice because they ran out of solutions for me. Now I have a non working device and switched back to the wired RT31P2 (best router ever).

Unfortunately for Vonage, I am not the only one having problems. Since they couldn't answer all the issues regarding this router they stopped selling it.
Then they switched to D-Link hoping for better luck but it seems that they just can't get the firmware right.
In my opinion they should invest in a couple of high end engineers to do the programming or they will go under pretty soon like their stock price seems to indicate....

will probably do the same very soon. I'd rather pay 10$ more and have Time Warner customer service than Vonage.
You said earlier that you used your phone adapter + WRT54G. How do you plug them to make it work ?
Can I do the same with my old Vonage phone adapter/router (wired) and WRTP54G (using it only as a wireless router) ?

I received this unit as a replacement for my Vonage Lynksys wireless unit which went bad after a year. Nothing but a nightmare to set up!!! Had a good friend of mine from Chicago who's ownd both Dlink and Lynksys wireless routers (non-Vonage units) help me with the set up and found the menus incomplete and hard to use......ie; we could find no save settings options anywhere and the Vonage 3rd level support verified that option is not available with the vwr----insane to say the least. Never got all my ports set up correctly and couldn't get my network printer to function as it did under the old Lynksys unit. Called Vonage back and told them to send my the telephone adapter and I'd get my own wireless router.....ordered the Lynksys wireless 54GL......it's worthy to note that I was tired of trying to get answers from Vonage upper level support on the VWR so I called Dlink and they don't even acknowledge the unit and when I pressed there 2nd level support guys they told me the unit was not supported by them and it was manufactured for Vonage by Dlink and that it was a BETA unit. This makes sense now after reading all the issues that I"ve read here on the post. DON'T GET A DLINK VWR Vonage UNIT UNLESS YOU JUST WANT THE BASICS.

PostPosted: Fri Oct 27, 2006 5:21 am    Post subject: D-Link VWR Firmware update ETA update? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi - I've (unfortunately) got a brand new D-Link VWR sitting next to me. I've been on Vonage for a couple years, using the original Motorola router and finally decided to upgrade the device. BTW, I love the service and have used it a lot during travels in Europe - which has saved a ton of money and astonished my boss. Anyway, I was attracted to the idea of only having one device and upgrading my wifi router all at the same time...but then I found this thread and am shaking in my boots. I'm tempted to return this thing.

Does anyone know if the D-Link VWR firmware update has been released and if there's any hope that my device, which I received in mid-October, already has it? (Pie in the sky, I know, I know)

So, assuming the firmware update hasn't been issued, I'll probably just sit on this box and keep using my trusty road warrior Motorola til the day comes. Most importantly, do you guys think the firmware update could really fix the problems with the VWR or should I just send it back?

Thanks
