I just reviewed my Vonage bill today and for the first time noticed that Vonage is now charging a 7% Illinois State Communications Service Tax and a Local Communications Service Tax. I called and tried to get an answer about these new taxes and as well as why I hadn't been notified by about the new tax and the billing department didn't seem to know why it all of a sudden appeared on my bill. I received no notification from the State or from Vonage (in an email or on their website) that these taxes would start in August. Has anyone else noticed a new "State Communications Service Tax" and "Local Communications Service Tax"? |

i too have been charged the new illinois taxes and this is the responce i have gotten from Vonage about this:
Regarding your inquiry about the taxes on your bill, state and local governments may assess taxes, surcharges and/or fees on your use of Vonage service. These charges may be a flat fee or a percentage of your Vonage charges and may change from time to time without notice. These charges are based on the rates applicable to the address you provided to us.
If you have any further questions, please contact our Billing Department at 1-866-243-4357.

Yeah, I wonder what is up with that. I called and and talked to a supervisor and he offered to credit both the amount of both taxes since they didn't notify me. However they plan to charge me moving forward. Seems like a sneaky move. I'm going to contact some cunsumer group regarding this... Relief from excessive government taxes was a main reason I left the OLD phone companies for Voip. Given my choppy phone quality it looks like it is time to find a new Voip provider or time to reluctantly return to Ma Bell. |
