hi,
I wanted to know is there any way we can use Vonage without a modem ? My folks in india took internet connection from beamcable which does not provide any modem. they gave us only a RJ45 which we directly connect to computer. Also we need to type in a user name and password to connect to internet. I got a linksys wireless adapter WRTP54G. Can anyone please tell me if i can connect to Vonage only with this router and how to manually cofigure the router to accept the ipaddress.

You'll probably also need to set the WRTP54G up with your user name and password under the PPPoE configuration. Then you'll need to configure your computer to get its IP dynamically from the WRTP54G.

Before you start any of this, be sure that your computer is connecting to the internet properly when it's plugged directly into the service. Then carefully write down its network configuration. That serves as a guide for what the WRTP54G will be doing in its place. Also, you'll be making some changes and you want to be able to get back to where you started if necessary.

hi steve,

could you please tell me whats a PP0E configuration and how to setup my linksys to work with my internet and computer ? I would really appreciate if u can give me some guidelines/steps to setup my Vonage connection. And yes, my computer is connecting to internet when i plug in the RJ45 and as u suggested I took a note of the configuration.

Unfortunately, I'm not a networking expert and I don't have a WRTP54G myself, but basically PPPoE is an internet protocol that allows you to log on to a service requiring user names and passwords, as yours does. You need to setup your WRTP54G so it can enter this information and establish its connection. You need to plug your computer into a LAN port on the WRTP54G, log on to the admin page, and find the PPPoE setup. Your users' manual can help with that, but I think it's on the setup tab under internet connection type on your router. Information you'll need to enter includes name, password, and possibly static IP.

Keep in mind that the ISP ought to be willing to help you with this. You're trying to configure a piece of equipment to connect to their system.
