I have the following:
PAP2 phone adapter I am in a hotel in China Hotel adsl cable is plugged in to a RJ45 splitter then one wire is going to the PAP2 and the other wire goes to computer.
In April I used this setup in the same hotel and it worked instantly. Now when I dial out I have dial tone but get a fast busy signal with every combination of numbers 7 digits 10 or 11 digits etc.
I have internet access. On the PAP2 3 blue lights are lit: (phone 1, ethernet and power) Occasionally the ethernet light blinks, but they are all on solid blue.
I have tried every combination of rebooting computer and phone adapter with no change.
There is no modem or router accessable. I am just plugged in to hotel's ADSL as mentioned above.
I checked with the hotel computer tech, but the phone adapter blew her mind. They called their isp who was equally baffled.
Can anyone help?
Thanks...Joe |

Steve,
Thanks for your reply. When I did the Testyourvoip test from Sydney I got a score of 1.1 twice.
When I did it from London I got a 3.4 the first time and 3.8 the second.
I tried Montreal and got a 4.3.
Does this help? |

One of the troubleshooting steps in the PAP2 manual says to set port forwarding on my router (after disabling DHCP and setting static ip address) However every time I try contacting the ip address through the browser (netscape and IE) it times out.
Is this related? How do I fix this?
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

What router are you trying to set up port forwarding on. I looked at the original post and the only possible router you could be encountering is the hotels router. Are you trying to log into that?
Using an RJ45 splitter could be part of your problem also. I checked them out online and they seem to be like sort of a HUB, but much less reliable. Have you tried bypassing this and going straight into the connection to see if it works? |

Thanks for stepping in on this. I tried connecting the PAP2 directly to the adsl line and get the same results..fast busy signal on dialing out. There is a dial tone both ways. Your right though, the only router would ne the hotel's. They told me the requested ports, mentioned in the PAP2 manual, were open. The splitter is just a small plastic Y plug. It isn't effecient but it has worked at this same hotel last April and at other hotels throughout China. |

From my experience in telephony, a fast busy usually denotes that service is unavailable. |

I'm getting fast busy signals too, but only on most of the calls; I need to redial several times to actually get through. This is happening with several phone numbers, not just one in particular... And usually by the 3rd call it goes through...
I'm using a RT31PT wired to the home. I suspect it has more to do with the Vonage network being overloaded vs. the LEC or especially cables and wiring. |

Could it be the phone itself as johnwesle suggested. In my experience with 3 phones in my own home, 1 phone almost always gives me a fast busy on the first try. But the other 2 phones work all the time on the first try.
I would suggest a different phone since you said there is dial tone both ways. It's a problem between the phone and the pap2.
perhaps carrying around a cheap corded phone will help after you make sure that it dials out always. My GE corded phone works great ($7 @ Walmart). |
