The backdoor to the VT-1005 is static at: 192.168.102.1 no matter what you have the network/LAN IP address set at or how or where you have the unit connected.

The problem that you encountered was what a lot of users did, and that was a failed Firmware Update. When notification was sent to the unit, it went to get the update and couldn't for a "short" period of time, so they say. What they didn't say is that it put some of the units into limbo/locked up at 4 blinks. And at 4 blinks you are locked out of the UI. I found that if you disconnect the MTA from power and the Internet, wait a second, plug the power back in and not the Internet, then set your CPUs IP address to 192.168.102.x (not 1. I did 5), connect the CPU directly to the PC port (and you may have to reboot the CPU) it can only get to the 1 blink stage and you can get right in using 192.168.102.1. You might have to preface it with http://.

Once in just navigate to the Advanced page (disregard all the other pages and settings) and then the "Reboot" button at the bottom of the page, press it, wait a minute, plug back in the Internet connection, and the unit will now (hopefully) act as it should and download the update (fast flashing light for 2-5 minutes), power cycle itself and then do the 1-2-3-4 blinking thing and then (at least I was) up and running. This process not even their Level 2 Techs knew about. And the sad thing is that it is just common sense and only took 10-15 minutes. I was down for several days.

If Vonage hadn't wasted my time by telling me that they were down and the update couldn't be accessed when it was the exact opposite and eventually pissing me off by making me wait for days (I'd still be waiting if I had listened to them and waited for the MTA to recover on its own), I would not have discovered this and been back up in the 15 minutes that it took me. That is if the update was available. Even if it wasn't my MTA would have been ready and waiting, not locked up. If Vonages' CEO spent more money on Tech Support and less on their ridiculous commercials, they'd have known better how to deal with these types of issues. Probably. So say the financial experts.

I hope this helps.

P.S.
When calling Tech Support and you get India, immediately ask for US Tech Support in a very demanding tone. They will then transfer you. All the Level 2's (US Tech Support) I have spoken with have said that India knows nothing and not to waste your time with them. It'll only make you crazier.

Yea...I think last nite...I either miraculously hit that combo that you speak of....or my firmware update went thru.

I wish they would notify us of these things before they happen so I'm not pulling my hair out trying to figure out what in the world is going on.

I changed the vt1005 ip to 192.168.1.60. With a gateway of 192.168.1.1. Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 I turned off the DHCP server as well.

It does not matter, actually, the adapter is still 192.168.102.1 for it's local network:

- Plug you computer cable into the VT1005
- Manually set your computer IP to 192.168.102.2 and gateway to 192.168.102.1
- You should be able to access the adapter

This works for me with the exact same setup as yours

Its obviously connected...as I get 4 blinks signifying "registering with Vonage servers"

That's not related, I also had the 4 blinks and no dialtone and suddenly after numerous powerdowns-ups it downloaded new firmware (rapid blinking) and started working again

At 4 Blinks the MTA will lock you out of the UI until it fully comes online. That is why you "must" unplug it from the Internet and power cycle it to get just the 1 blink. Then with your CPU connected to the PC port and set at 192.168.102.2 you should be able to get right in using the static back door IP of 192.168.102.1. It doesn't matter what you have reset the MTA to.

OK - after reading these columns for a while I have a solution for relative newbies

(1) Plug an ethernet cable to the 'PC' port of the vt1005 unit, NOT the WAN port.
(2) Either (a) Plug the other end of this cable either to a router/switch, and plug your PC into the same switch or (b) directly to the PC that you are trying to use to configure the vt1005 (only if you are using a crossover cable - if you don't know what this is, you don't have one)
(3) make sure that your PC is either using DHCP to get an IP address (the vt1005 will give it one - it seems to have a DHCP server built in), or has a static address that can see 192.168.102.1,
(4) Make sure that your switch/router isn't trying to be the DHCP server at the same time, or at least has a subnet mask big enough to let you see 192.168.102.1. On the later Linksys models, the subnet mask is set by a dropdown. If your router's LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1 or something, you can set the subnet mask to 255.255.128.0 and that should be close enough.
(4) in a browser type in http://192.168.102.1 - should bring up the admin screen

A lot of people have said that the vt1005's address is 192.168.102.1, but this is only true if you are plugged into the 'PC' port, which seems to have its own DHCP server built in.

Hope this helps.
Neil
