I've been using the V-Phone (with some, but not complete, success) since it came out, but I haven't seen many other users out there. So, I'm curious: Who's using the V-Phone, and what do you think of it?

Perhaps we can use this thread to discuss general V-Phone issues.

I was wondering, with the V-Phone, do you have to have a Full Acct? (either basic500 or unlimited) or a Softphone Acct?

the Vonage website does not mention what type of plan you need to use it..

what issues have you had with it?

To get a V-Phone, you have to sign up for a new account. You can get a 500-minute or unlimited plan.

The primary issues I've had are:

1. For a while, my computer would freeze (actually, go to 100% CPU usage) when a call was answered, rendering my computer and the V-Phone unusable. Vonage determined I had a corrupted options.ini file on the V-Phone, which was resolved by deleting it.

2. Call waiting cannot be turned off. Vonage has said this is a known issue.

3. I experience a slight (but very annoying) delay in the conversation. Vonage has not yet been able to resolve this for me.

I have a Vonage line and a softphone line. the way this sounds a V-phone (14.95 for 500 min) could replace my softphone(9.95 for 500 min) that i could use on any pc with a broadband connection. Kind of like carrying around your linksys adapter in a usb drive. Have I missed something?

Nope, you haven't missed anything. The V-Phone is essentially a softphone where the software resides on the USB stick (and therefore can be inserted into any PC).

I wanted to be able to use my account while travelling so transferred my virtual number to a vphone (was already paying 7.99 Cdn for the number, so for $7 more I can have a 14.99 vphone with 500 minutes).

Other than Vonage cancelling my virtual number 3 days before they attached it to the vphone (arghh!) the vphone has been great. I set the network availability to my main account, so it is basically a virtual number most of the time, but when I am out of my office I can use it on any computer.

So far so good.

If the V-Phone is nothing more that the SoftPhone software on a USB drive, what is the advantage of having a V-Phone? Why do they price V-Phone service $5 more a month?

Does teh softphone software use the registry? Couldn't you just download the softphone software to a USB drive and run it from there?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

if you bought the vphone in a retail store, activate or register the device on the Vonage website. you'll see below the page "bought Vonage at the store? activate it now"
once you're able to register the vphone in your account, you can now move your number to the vphone and back again to your original device.

when you log on to your web account, click on ADD ONS then "move-a number" feature. choose your number beside the present device where your number is registered. click on continue then you will be given an option where you want your number to be moved. click the drop down button under the DEVICE WHERE YOUR NUMBER WILL BE MOVED, you'll see vphone registered already. choose vphone then click on continue.

there you can move your primary number (for example you only have one line on your account), to the vphone device and use that vphone anywhere you go. plug the vphone in the usb port of any computer w/ a high speed internet connection ofcourse, then you're ready to go. technically, since you moved your primary number to the vphone, your device at home will be useless coz there's no number registered on that device. if you want to use your device at home, again, log in to your web account and transfer the number back again to your main device.

you just need to wait for 15 mins for the changes to take effect before plugging in your vphone device.
don't pick up the handset of your phone device that it attached to the original Vonage device for the number to be moved successfully to the vphone

also applies if you have another device. for example you have a motorola 2442 and d link vta. just make sure both devices is registered in your account..
vphone device is available in retail stores like bestbuy, circuit city, radioshack.

if device is bought in retail store especially in best buy, no number is registered in the device. you're just buying the device itself. you just need to register the device online.
if you bought device online, it has a number included on that device. you can choose which rate plan you want for vphone number when you click on "BUY NOW"

no charges for using "move-a-number"
no need to call Vonage
really convenient..

Softphone does not automatically launch on some PCs.

Symptom: The USB drive is detected but the softphone does not launch automatically.
Solution: Manually startup the softphone. Using Windows Explorer, left click on the drive associated with the V-Phone (with the MAC ID volume label and the orange 'V' icon - typically the E drive). Locate the file 'Start Vonage Talk.exe', and double click on it to launch the softphone.

note: vphone currently not compatible with machintosh computers

V-Phone causes Mac OSX problems when inserted into a Mac computer.

Solution: The V-Phone is currently not supported on Mac PCs. However, the flash drive portion of the V-Phone is recognized and operational on version 10.4.6 of OSX. When the V-Phone is inserted into any other version of OSX, it causes the computer to reboot.

I just recently got a vphone and so far it works perfectly for me for phone calls...

The only issue that i have with it is it seems to route all my audio thru to the headset on the vphone.

I'd like to ring to my speaker on my laptop, but i want to take the call on the headset... (which i currently have it set up that way)

But all my audio for my pc get routed to the stupid headset..

New user, bought mine at Circuit City (BestBuy was out of them), and just signed up a couple days ago.

The automated web-based subscription mechanism didn't go smoothly and I had to call Vonage's toll-free number, but when it was all done, the Vphone works great.

How do we upgrade the software/firmware for the Vphone, or is that done automatically? What 'tweaks' or 'hacks' are there to extend the Vphone's functionality?

Thanks!
