Well, "FarmerBob"s solution worked on both my MTA's ~1400hrs. I had service on all 3 lines - until now, 1540hrs. Once again, "Watch das blinkin' lights". I give up.....

It looks as though there is something deeper here (I'm not surprised) and I fear that if TS can't figure out the initial issues, whatever you are going through is probably well over their heads. One of my main concerns was that with most gear that uses firmware, you do not mess around with the unit while it is trying to do its thing. I know once it is obvious that if is getting the update and is processing - NO TOUCH! This might not be the case here with this issue. Otherwise, all the dinking around that they make us do would surely trash these MTA's. Maybe that's what happened to yours? Delayed Stress Syndrome.
Unless we're lucky enough that the simple stuff evades them and that they might do well with the more complicated things. Who knows.
I will be very interested in the out come of this current issue.
Take Care (again). . . . . . fb
P.S. Oh and when you call TS, bypass India and ask for US Tech Support directly. It'll save you many head aches. |

Make sure your VT takes the new firmware before placing it back behind your router. |

Where is it said that it was moved? If you read my original post (http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic16053.html) you will see that all you do is disconnect the MTA from the network (not move it) and then after resetting is done you reconnect it just as it was. The only piece that you are moving is the CPU if you don't already have it plugged into the PC port on the MTA.

If he didn't move it that's fine. Rebooting would not get my VT1005 to take the new firmware. It did allow me to get into the web interface. I had to move the VT direclty to the cable modem and change the VT to DHCP to get the firmware update and then moved it back behind the firewall with its static IP.
I am curious as to what Skippir's firmware version is nonetheless since his VT1005 is back in the weeds. |

They didn't update - nothing was "moved". The mta's are plugged into the router. I disconnected them from the router & plugged the PC into each one. It worked the first time on both, but gave out 90 minutes later and a second try didn't work. I'll just wait for the new units tomorrow and see what happens. At this point, I'm considering 2 tin cans with a long string It would be just as useful as their tech support...

Am now in DAY FIVE of this outage. Hello? Vonage? Do you give a flying fsck about your customer base?
Why don't they just admit the VT1005 is toast, give it up, and mail out new working MTAs to those of us who're still out? |

Now I have to eat a slice of humble pie and thank Doug at the US help desk. I guess before 0900 EDT is the time to call: I didn't get patched through to India or Bangladesh or wherever normal L1 calls go.
It took a huge download (lasting at least 4-5 minutes straight), then an automatic reboot, to get the MTA working. It now works. YAY! Let's hope this stays up for another 2.5 years with no further issues. |

Good luck to you and I hope it continues to work. My L3 contact never suggested a download. Hopefully, DHL will show up today with my new units, and they will work.
As a side note, I considered switching services. AT&T Call Vantage just doesn't cut it with service features or cost. I thought Verizon VoiceWing would be good - more features than Vonage for ~$12/month more. But get this - they will only connect two lines. To get a third line, you have to have another ISP!! Figure that one out....the rep and her supervisor didn't understand that either. On top of everything else, when I called Verizon, while someone answered promptly, I was transferred FIVE times before getting to the proper department at VoiceWing sales! THAT, too, made me start to think about the deal, but at least I could understand what they were saying.

I thought that rapidly blinking light was going to go on forever. The only way I could get my VT1005 to take that big download was to put the VT back to DHCP and connect directly to the cable modem.
The whole process to recable my network for the update and then return to the config that worked for the last 2 years was about 15 minutes.
I also looked into feature sets of other Voip providers and have yet to find anything better. I think I'll be OK as long as Vonage doesn't do this again. |
