I live in the border line of two area codes. My area code is 225, and others have 985. However, calls from one area code to another in this city is considered local. The 225 numbers vonage supplies are only available to other surrounding areas which are considered long distance. For instance, I could not get my temporary virtual number to be local to users in my area.
The numbers assign by Vonage are 225-612-XXXX, mine is 225-294-XXXX. I know the 225-294 refers to the area I am in, but since Vonage could not give me a local number, I am worried that even though my current number is local, after transferring it might not.
Is this true, or will local friends and family to whom my current line is not long distance remain the same way even after porting the number to vonage? After reading the information about how LNP should work, it tells me that it should remain local even though vonage currently cant offer numbers for this area. Since my number belongs to this area LNP portability, I understand, should still keep it local for users in this town. However, I just need confirmation since I do not want to have it long distance fot his area.
Thanks for your help |

I believe that the list of phone numbers that Vonage displays on the website if you choose "assign me a new vonage number" is much more limited than the pool of temporary numbers they use if you select "keep my existing number."
They will probably assign you a temporary number of 225-395-0xxx or 225-395-4xxx from Level 3, the only CLEC operating in your rate center. I can't see them assigning a 225-612 number, as that would be a toll call from your rate center.

HI,
I would like to comment on your inquiry about local calling exchanges. From what I would guess is that whatever exchange that is assigned, that any toll charges would apply, as if it was a land line.
For example, if these two landline numbers as toll calls, 999-999-xxxx & 999-998-xxxx, it wouldn't matter where these phone numbers reside. If one resides on Vonage, then the landline remaining would have a toll call (and Vonage charges would apply, unless you have unlimited).
I am certain that I am right about this, but if I am wrong someone please correct me. If I am wrong on this, this would be a surprise (and I would learn something which is good).
OFF TOPIC
About local number portability (LNP). I have been told by Verizon Wireless & Sun Rocket that if I move to another state that I lose my phone number, but Vonage seems to imply that it doesn't matter where one moves. What is the deal on this? I think the FCC rules may have something to do with it (not requiring carriers to port out of geographic areas if they don't want to). BTW: I have Verizon Wireless & Vonage (just emailed Sun Rocket, also TMobile, for insight). All execpt Vonage tells me I would lose the number.
I am going to post a more lenthly explanation about this situation in the correct section (as not to get too much off topic).
At least I hope this helped the person I responded to initially.
