OK...I have Cox cable for service, the Motorola SB5120 modem, and theLinksys PAP2. My phone service is sketchy at best. Sometimes I can pick up the phone and make a call with no problems. Most of the time, however, I have to hang-up, redial, etc. Sometimes I have to do this 3-4 times.

I've seen other posts about a Hawking booster and possibly a new modem.

Who else has experienced this and what's the real way to fix it?

From my understanding the PAP2 requires a router between it and the modem. Is this your current setup? you said that your modem goes directly into the PAP2.

Anyway, it would help us a great deal if you would run some Voip tests and post the results here.

Run the test in this website as well as the testyourvoip.com

we'll go from there.

OK....I am actually not at the computer right now, I will run the Voip tests when I get home and post them.

As to your question, yes thecable runs from the modem, to a router (Belkin F5D8231-4) and then to the computer and PAP2.

OK...I went to the website, and it came back with a 4.4 (to Boston), 4.3, and 4.4.

Then I did the Voip test from Vonage, and came up with these results:

Download: 5.42 MBps (Green); 5.6Mbps;
Upload: 1.91 Mbps (Green); 1.92Mbps;
QOS: 79% (Yellow); 72%; 98% 3rd time
RTT: 14ms
Max Pause: 90 ms
jitter: 3.9ms

Is the QOS anything that is adjustable?

It sounds like the testyourvoip site's test was not very helpful b/c according to them, your phone calls should be crystal clear.

The test on this website is more informative because it represents 3 different test with 3 different QoS results.

What I suspect by these results is that the issue can come from bascially 2 areas. Your ISP is having issues with continuity of service or that your router is not able to send data both ways to your PAP2 consistently.

Now there is a 3rd possibility which is that your SB5120 is not working well with Cox. I have read elsewhere that others are having issues with this as well. It might be wise to do a search on this forum for it to see what others have done. Some have even gone as far as getting a different modem and have reported that it resolved their issues. I cannot speak for it since I use the SB5120 with no issues but it's with charter comm.

Does your router have QoS abilities? if so, you really should activate it b/c if you use your internet while on the phone and you do not have priority for your voice, it will definitely break it up and create choppy audio.

I just looked at your router's user's guide and it does not. To compound the problem, it comes with a firewall which has been discussed in other posts that it can cause issues with the Vonage adapters.

I would try the following first.

Turn off your belkin router's firewall or disable it (see pg 55 of your manual).

If this solves your choppy audio, you are good to go. If this does not solve your problem, then keep the firewall disabled and try the following:


I would give a static IP address to your PAP2 something like 192.168.2.150. The reason why giving your PAP2 this IP address is b/c your belkin router's IP address is 192.168.2.1 (see pg 23 of your manual). There is apparently no password required to get into your web interface.

Set up your PAP2 as a static IP address and then in your belkin router's web interface, put the IP address of the PAP2 in the DMZ mode (see pg 58 in your manual).

If this solves your issues, then you are good to go. hope this helps.

Disable the firewall on the Belkin router.

FYI if you are able to do port forwarding on the belkin router I would advise doing that also, Assign a stick IP for the PAP2. (it is in the manual and done from the phone's IVR system) Bandwidth saver also down to NORMAL inside of your web account can sometimes assist with choppy audio.
