I received a D-Link VWR router today instead of the Linksys I ordered. Everything is working fine except I cannot set the WEP Security settings. The router seems to accept the new settings, but they are never saved.

Has anyone experienced this issue, or are there any new firmware updates that address the issue?

Thanks,

David

Unfortunately, this is a new item and even though I use many D-Link products, I have no experience with this device. I tried looking through search engines and the D-Link site and found very little on it.

I am curious, however about your case.

1) If you ordered the Linksys, why did you get a D-Link?

2) Have you talked to anyone in customer service about this, and what was their reaction?

I ordered a replacement for my linksys router and they sent me the Dlink VWR also. I tried setting the WEP and it would not keep the settings. I was able to secure it by using WPA and a Pre-Shared Key but I would rather use WEP.

Another thing I noticed is that I wanted to open one of my machines in a DMZ, but when I selected the enable box and clicked the apply button, nothing happened. Because I ocassionally access my machine remotely I'm not able to because of not being able to change the settings.

I will definitely call them and speak to them about why they sent me that model instead of what I asked for.. maybe the VWR was released a bit early in order to replace the Linksys.

So if anyone knows how to change these settings it would be great if you could post this info.

Thanks,

David G.

I had the same problem when I initially tried to set up a WEP key on my VWR. To get WEP to work on the VWR place a space after every 2 characters in you WEP key. For example AB CD EF 12 34 etc. Then save and restart your access point. You should be good to go after that.

i can answer one of ur questions - the reason why they sent u dlink is because WRT54GP2 is currently out of stock; either way, it has the same functionality

I just spoke with Vonage's tech support and they said that it is a known issue with both WEP and the DMZ features. Dlink is currently working on a firmware update that will address both issues. They also said that the firmware update will be automatically pushed out to the routers.

So I guess a good idea would be to note your router's current firmware image ( my current one is VWR-11.4.0-r060331-1.00.03-r060627.img) and the you can tell if the firmware has been updated after the push.

Thanks all of your help.

You should use WPA anyway vs. WEP. It's much more secure.

I have some older cards on a couple of my machines that don't support WPA so instead of replacing them I would rather get WEP working. Also my biggest concern is not being able to set up the DMZ, so I'm still waiting for them to update the firmware...

Thanks

Don't but this device if...
1. you actually need a router to open ports. Like hosting a game server.
2. you hate "user hostile" router menues.
3. you actually would like to connect with wireless laptop.
DLink has gone a step beyond it's usual worthlessness as a router with this one. The Voip functioned ok but it is touted as "4 boxes in one". Well, a usable router is not one of them..

Sorry to say but I actually sent this back to Vonage because in my line of business I really need to be able to have these things working. Can't wait on any updates.. who knows when they will do it..

Good luck to everyone with this one....
