Has anyone configured Nokia E61 to work with Vonage. I am looking for the instructions for the SIP.

I currently have Vonage service but not the softphone. Do I need to get the softphone in order to use the SIP or can I use my existing tel number and use the Nokia.

Thanks.

Yes. You would need to install a softphone program like SJPhone AND get a $9.95 softphone account for you to use your Nokia E61 as a softphone.

However, if you read your TOC with Sprint or Verizon, it is a violation to use your cell phone's internet data stream as a softphone (as well as streaming internet music). You will see evidence all over DSL Reports as well as in the PC Mag archives of customers who had their DATA ONLY shut off, and forced to pay an early termination charge for using their PDA cellphones as a softphone.

You can risk it but I'd can't see why it would be worth the risk...

I have an E-61 and really have a problem with the softphone because it has no NAT translation. On the three wi-fi routers thatj I have seriously tried to configure it for, one works, one sort of works, and one doesn't work at all. This unit really needs to support stun.

The E61's wifi is really designed to be used on a corporate campus or something. It doesn't have a great sniffer built into it and it is a little work configuring it for each router.

You should note that the version will only get you 3g speeds in Europe and Asia. It supports 2100mhz UMTs, not 800/1900mhz UMTs. It will work on a US EDGE based network.

If you are going to violate your terms of service, I would try to hide my connection in a VPN stream. I'm not sure that the processor on the E61 will be strong enough to both do Voip and VPN simultaneously.

I am seriously debating putting this thing up for sale and going for a n Imate JAS/JAM.

you guys keep mentioning cell provider terms, and that breaking them by using Voip and WiFi might not be worth it....

am i missing something, or isn't using WiFi to make calls over Voip bypassing your cell provider (Verizon, Sprint, Cingular) altogether?? in other words, how would Verizon even have a clue, if you weren't even sending anything over THEIR network, and instead using a local WiFi connection to do so?

sorry if i'm missing the point...

I might be missing the point as well. If you own an Unlocked, Non-Subsidized mobile phone from any phone manufacturer, the cellular provider can't dictate how it can or can't be used in their TOC/TOS, provided you are not utilizing their network. If a 3rd party application allows the phone to be used as a "Softphone" provided an AP is within reach, how is cellular service used? I also thought the service was "bypassed" and the handset was merely being used over a Voip network.
