1. Location : Suzhou, China
2. ISP name and type: China Telecom, ADSL
3. Upload and download speeds: See below
4. Modem make and model: ZTE ZXDSL 831
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: Motorola VT2442
6. Setup of Network: ADSL Modem---->VT2442-->PC
7. Issue: Service was working fine for almost a week since I arrived in China. For the last 12 hours, there is a dial tone (and the tone telling me I have unchecked voicemail). However, when I dial any number (including voicemail), there is an immediate 'error' tone. I have a 703 (Virginia) number.

Anyone having similar problems or ideas for solutions would be much appreciated. I can't call Vonage customer service directly from my Chinese landline! Have sent them an email. Thanks.

I would first check to see if your Voip service is being blocked somewhere along the line. Just bring up a command prompt (Start->Run->Cmd) and enter in the following commands and post back with the results.

1) tftp tftp.vonage.net get test
2) tracert a.voncp.com

If you call your Vonage line does it ring?
What kind of error tone is it you get when you make a call? (Fast busy, recording, beeping?)

Thanks xcrunxc. Here are the results:

The error tone is not a Fast busy or a beep. It sounds like a waiting tone... high tone, mid tone, falling tone. I hear this combination about 3 times, and then the line goes dead.

C:\>tftp tftp.vonage.net get test
tftp: don't know host 'tftp.vonage.net'

C:\>tracert a.voncp.com

Well, that's not good. That is Vonage's configuration server that gives your device the information it needs to get setup on the network. Now, lets figure out if its just a DNS issue or something else. Run this command in the same prompt: 'tftp 216.115.30.56 get test' and if that doesn't work do 'ping 216.115.30.56' and report back.

I ran both commands, just in case. Here are the results:

C:\>tftp 216.115.30.56 get test
Transfer successful: 5 bytes in 1 second, 5 bytes/s

C:\>ping 216.115.30.56

Pinging 216.115.30.56 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.115.30.56: bytes=32 time=297ms TTL=41
Reply from 216.115.30.56: bytes=32 time=298ms TTL=42
Request timed out.
Reply from 216.115.30.56: bytes=32 time=295ms TTL=41

Ping statistics for 216.115.30.56:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 295ms, Maximum = 298ms, Average = 296ms

Ok, so it was just a DNS issue. Not a big deal, Vonage should be able to route to it anyway using their own DNS servers hardcoded into the device.

Are you able to receive incoming calls on your Vonage line?

Also, please go to www.testyourvoip.com and run a test call to Boston then post the results back here.

I don't know if I can receive incoming calls. I haven't received any for the last 24 hours. I can't call myself because I'm in China at the moment and don't have another phone capable of international calls.

You mentioned this was a DNS issue... what does that mean, and do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this, or do I have to wait for Vonage to get back to me? Since I can't call them, I'll have to rely on e-mail exchanges for them to figure out the problem, and based on what I've heard in this forum, they are not very prompt with email.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem again. The issue got resolved by itself about a week ago, but returned yesterday. I can receive calls, but cannot make calls out. When I do, I get a fast busy signal. It doesn't matter what number I'm calling (including voicemail retrieval). Have tried unplugging/restarting the entire set-up, as well as reseting the Vonage adapter and restarting the entire set-up. No luck.

My configuration now is:
ADSL modem --> D-Link wireless router --> Vonage adapter (VT2442).

Have tried removing the wireless router from the equation, but there is no difference.

Please help!
