My "original" setup for Vonage is my Surfboard 2100 -> Linksys BEFSR41 v2 -> Linksys RTP300. BEFSR41 would plug into my computers and the Vonage box. I was having problems with the BEFSR41 'dropping' my network connections. It seemed like it would go a few hours and then it would drop all DHCP connections. It was very random, so I didn't suspect any setting was to blame (I did check all the settings FYI).

So it's old. Linksys is on about v5 or 6 or that modem. So I swap out that for the Vonage box, the RTP300 - currently running firmware 1.00.62. (So the setup became Surfboard modem -> Linksys RTP300, used as router and Vonage adapter). A newb question here is can you use the Linksys firmware from the Linksys site on these boxes from Vonage?

As the subject suggests, this is not the real intent of my post. On
games played prior to swapping the router I would receive about 200ms ping times, as well as very clear calls. Using the stock RTP300 as the sole router I now receive almost a intermittent scratchy sound. The ping time on the games have gone up to around 300ms. Not bad still, but not what it used to be either.

Maybe someone has experience with an RTP300 and has pointers for me? I have read that it's not the greatest, maybe replacement is the only solution to finding the perfect combination of good quality with good speed, reliably.

I'll get some technical info if you think it'd help, but am typing from work, so I'd have to wait.

No. 1.00.62 is the latest, and if you managed to load the firmware from Linksys, Vonage would simply upgrade it back to 1.00.62 for you anyway.

In a word... Yes.

The WRTP54G and RTP300 are "decent" consumer grade routers, but there's not a lot you can do to optimize them. You can try playing around with the QoS settings and see if you can get your games optimized, but somehow I doubt that is going to do you a lot of good.

I use the Linksys WRT54GL router along with aftermarket firmware to make the most of it. There are lots of good routers out there, but the WRT54GL has served me very well. And the WRTP54G/RTP300 devices are fantastic Vonage adapters once you take away all that nasty networking hard work from them. Wink

That's kind of what I figured. I'll see if I can optimize the settings and go from there. Thanks for the reply!

Best of luck.

One bit of advice. Don't waste a LOT of time trying to make the RTP300 work for you. I spent months trying to get my WRTP54G working properly on my network (of course, I have very limited upstream, at under 200k, and I use P2P/BitTorrent). Finally, after trying everything I could think of, and watching the WAF (*) drop like a stone, I gave up and put in a good router.

15 minutes messing about with the new router to get the settings dialed in, and I had clearer voice on Vonage than I had ever heard before, my Internet connection was fast and responsive, and my all-time record is 48 days of uptime without touching a single thing on my network (note: The router has NEVER died on me, I just like to rewire things from time to time, so I'd probably be at almost a year of uptime if I could just stop messing with stuff).

(*) WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor, The Factor by which all other factors are judged. Wink
