Hello...

Hopefully this isn't a dumb questions...newbie to Vonage/VOIP concepts.... Confused

I'm wanting to know if you can add a Vonage account, and still have regular phone service running at the same time?

Basically, I'm in a situation where we want to add another phone line, but instead of doing it through the phone company (which is quite expensive) I wanted to see if Vonage could be setup via our DSL connection and run along with it...so we'd have our regular phone #/service through phone company, and then have another # for our Vonage...so we'd have 2 phone numbers, etc.

Will that work? Thanks for any input on this...

That works. You can add a second Vonage number off of the same adapter later so you'd have three in all.

If your thinking about including the Vonage phone into the house phone wiring and using 2 line phones that gets tricky and sets the table for diaster. Invest in cordless phones would be my advice. The Vonage adapter does not like foreign voltages, especially the ring voltage. One aw siht wipes out a 1000 atta boys.

As the others have posted:

1. Yes, you can easily do this, as long as your DSL connection has enough bandwidth to handle Vonage. Vonage would be a completely separate (and portable) phone system.

2. You probably want a completely separate telephone system (as OldSnipe recommended, a cordless base that can handle multiple handsets scattered around the house is ideal).

If you like, you can get a 2-line phone system (corded or cordless), plug Vonage into one line, your regular telco connection into the other (important note: using phone patch cables that ONLY HAVE TWO WIRES), and off you go.

That will work. It is exactly what I'm doing now.

Thanks for the input all. I feel comfortable now with taking the next step and picking up the equipment/testing/etc.

As far as bandwith, we're using a 1.5mb DSL plan from Fairpoint (New England), so hopefully that will be enough to handle everything....

Great. Thanks again.

Another quick question...it may have been addressed on this forum, but I don't have time to check...but does Vonage/VOIP work with both dynamic and static IP scenarios? Our ISP currently assigns a dynamic to us...but may need to a static for work purposes. Just curious if that will be an issue...

Just an update...

I got Vonage yesterday via Best Buy. I picked up a Linksys PAP2 v2 adapter, with 'unlimited' plan. Basically got it all for free w/rebates and $50 BBuy gift card to boot.

For phones, I'm using my Uniden 5.8ghz cordless phone sys w/ 3 handsets.

The setup process was pain-free, quick and worked good (I especially like the online acct admin features). I have noticed some slight random quick drops when someone is talking, but other than that, it's not bad. It's too early to be singing praises to my Vonage service, but if it continues like this, I'll be a happy camper.
