I'm a bit curious as to your thoughts on this subject. Would you get a second line from Vonage (already have one of course) or obtain it from another Voip service?

The reason I ask is that there is no cost advantage to getting a second line from Vonage. It's still $24.95 (unlimited). Second, Vonage is not profitable - will they go under some day and leave us without service?

So is it better to get a second line from another Voip carrier and hope they don't go out of business the same day?

Also, what happens to our ported numbers that we have had for almost 17 years if Vonage or any other Voip service were to suddenly go out of business? Can they be ported when the Voip provider has shut down?

Would appreciate your thoughts. I love Vonage. It works great here, but concerned about putting my eggs all in one basket.

I'd say you've answered your own question. If you're concerned that Vonage will go out of business, then you should go with another provider for the second line, provided the cost is within reason.

If I were to get a second line I would go with a different Voip provider I suppose.

I would go with another Voip provider if they were running a great special and offered a killer price on the second line, other wise I would just get it through Vonage. As for losing my number if Vonage went belly up, that wouldn't bother me too much, because I don't run a business from my home.

As for Vonage going out of business, I hope that doesn't happen. I just managed to free myself from Hellsouth (Bellsouth) and hope I never have to deal with them again.

One other factor to consider is network complexity. With Vonage the second line would possibly be on the same device, therefore no additional hardware.

I think this also might reduce your upfront costs as well as provide a way out of a contract for the second line.

With a single device with a single provider you are less likely to run afoul of any configuration conflicts.

On the other hand, a single adapter failure kills both your lines.

once i purchase a new machine for vista i will probley slap linux on this machine and turn it into an asterisk box. then I can get a sip provider with inbound and outbound and use the linux box as my device Very Happy

O.K., I'll bite - what the heck is an asterisk box and how does it work and why would someone want to do that?

Basically a unlocked ATA. That way you can go to other Voip providers who will register your ATA for service with them. Vonages uses locked ATA and they can only be used on Vonage services unless you can figure out how to unlock and find the admin. ID and password.
