PostPosted: Mon Aug 21, 2006 6:04 pm    Post subject: Actiontec GT701-WG/Motorola VT2442 Reply with quote Back to top

I had a wireless network set up with my Actiontec unit prior to installing the Vonage unit with internet/file sharing capabilities.

After setting up my Vonage unit, my laptop was able to connect wirelessly to the internet, however I was no longer able to connect to my desktop, which is hardwired to the VT2442 unit.

I have spent hours on the phone with Vonage and have had no luck. Actiontec is equally unhelpful.

If I cannot renetwork these computers, Vonage is out and Qwest is back in.

I'm great with directions as long as I understand what is being done. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

How exactly is your network setup now?

QWET DSL line into the Actiontec (modem w/wireless gateway).

Actiontec cabled to the VT2442.

VT2442 cabled to the Desktop.

Phones connected to the VT2442.

Is this what you were asking? I know just enough to be dangerous Smile so be careful how you word things LOL!

That was what I was looking for.

For now I would just plug the desktop into the Actiontec. Is there a reason the desktop is plugged into the VT2442 instead of the Actiontec?

The Actiontec only has one ethernet port so I'm stuck with the network set up I described earlier.

I do have a different DSL modem that does not have the wireless gateway but I used that with a different DSL provider. I used a Linksys router with that. Should I give up trying to work around the Actiontec and use the other modem w/ the Linksys?

The GT701 only has 1 ethernet port.

Is the Linksys router wireless? What model is it (eg WRT54G, BEFxxxx)?

The ideal would probably be to use the non-router modem, or turn the router function off on the current modem/gateway. You would then have it set up modem > Linksys > Laptop, Desktop, VT2442. It should work with Modem > VT2442 > Linksys, but it may not.

Yep the linksys is a wireless router. I forgot I can turn the Actiontec wireless capability off.

I'll give it a try later tonight when my husband is done working with the desktop.

Thanks for your help - I hope this works! Keep your fingers crossed otherwise I'll be posting again.

Karen, getting back to your setup with the Actiontec and VT2442 for a moment, your setup really should work. Is the Vonage phone working with the VT2442 plugged into the Actiontec? How, exactly, do you have things cabeled? Is everything set for dynamic IP addressing?

I gather that before Vonage you had the laptop connecting wirelessly and the desktop plugged into the Actiontec ethernet port. Is this correct?

Yes, you're correct, my setup should work and the Vonage phone DOES work.

Here's what I know:

I have my networking set up correctly - and I've rerun the network wizard a million times and restarted both computers equally as many times. My Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I've run the Norton Network Wizard to make sure I'm not stuck behind the Norton firewall - on both computers. I've also tried DISABLING both Norton firewalls. I've disconnected the VT2442 and reconnected to the Actiontec and voila - it all worked again.

I've cried and threatened to throw it all out my second story window.

And I'm not entirely sure what dynamic IP addressing is but after 2 hours on the phone with Vonage today changing every setting known to them - it all still doesn't work. He was supposed to call me back after I checked disconnecting the VT2442 but he never did so Vonage has deserted me.

CABLING:
1 Phone line from the house is connected to the Actiontec
2 Actiontec is connected to the VT2442
3 Desktop is connected to the VT2442
4 Phone line is connected to the VT2442 phone 1 jack
5 Fax line is connected to the VT2442 phone 2 jack

Internet on both computers, fax and phone all work. The ONLY thing not working is the file sharing. What gets me is that when I disconnected the VT2442, the two computers saw each other again AND I DIDN'T CHANGE A THING. Hmmm?

And yes, the original setup is what you described.

I am VERY appreciative of all your help.
