Has anyone use the ZyXEL X-550 router? Will it do what was suggested to do with the Linksys WRT54GL or a Buffalo WHR-G54S? |

I bought this router for it's Voip QoS feature. I'm a computer professional and it took me a long time and a call to tech support to get the QoS working right. Advanced features like port forwarding / triggering, stream engine (QoS), and static DHCP were confusing to set up, but worked well once they were. The user interface is fair, but it has a real time log viewer which was great and something not available on any other $100 router.
I noticed that my laptop acquired an IP much fasted on this router then on my previous Belkin router. It was 3-4 seconds faster and even with a low signal the speed is excellent.

Thanks for the info. I decided to pick up the router already since it was on rebate and I was traveling to a city without sales tax.
(Glad to hear I did not screw up)
Can you post what the settings should be.
I was expecting to be able to set QOS based on Physical Port or MAC, but see it is only by IP, so I guess I have to make my PAP2 static or can I rust it to always stay at the first IP given out? (It is currently the first device on the router, and probably boots and requests an IP faster then any of the PCs) |

Woooo Hooo its working well.
I had to set the PAP2 as a Static DHCP address.
This was a bit tricky. I had to first set it with DHCP. It took teh first ip at xx.xx.xx.100 Then I bumped up the DHCP rage to start at 101, and set the PAP2 at Static DHCP at 100. Then I set the Range xx.xx.xx.0 to xx.xx.xx.99 to priority 128 (Mid) set teh range xx.xx.xx.100 to xx.xx.xx.100 to Priority 0 (Highest) and set the Range xx.xx.xx.101 to xx.xx.xx.255 to priority 128 (Mid)
Auto speed detect on the Stream Engine setup failed so I set the speed to 256 (since most speed tests showed I had 314 up load speed.).
My uploads are a bit slower, but my Vonage works without dropout even when sending a large file or big email. |
