PostPosted: Sat Aug 19, 2006 3:05 pm    Post subject: Can I demote WRTP54G from a router to a voip box only? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a WRTP54G Wireless router with 2 phone ports box that I use for my WAN, LAN and Vonage service. I've thrown in the towel with it. I have had just too many problems with this thing as a wireless router and LAN router that I want to demote it. Is it possible to set it up through the admin controls to force it to function only as a Voip box? I'm going to buy a much better router. This WRTP54G is the pits. What I'm looking to do is to buy a new router for my WAN and LAN services and then connect the old WRTP54G to it only for Vonage phone.

I hope I can do this. I don't want to have to spend the extra $$$ for a new Voip box like the D-Link VTA.

PS: I wish I would have looked at this forum before I bought the WRTP54G. It looks like a decent amount of users have had enough trouble with it.

Glad to have you aboard the boards.
Hopefully you mean the WRTP54G?
Don't be discouraged with Linksys because of this product. It may not be Linksys responsibility. The WRT54GL for instance is still a good router, so posters say. Just set up the WRTP54G behind the new router that you choose, with the WRTP54G mac as high priority QoS. You should be set.

You can turn off the wireless on the "Basic Wireless Settings" screen. Use the pull down in the field for "wireless network mode" and select "disable". That will turn off the wireless functions of the router so it won't send any conflicting signals with your new wireless router.

Ok, so I couldn't find out how to setting the WRTP54G mac address as high priority QoS. I ended up putting the unit on my new router's DMZ. It works! Now, my question is this; is it problematic to have the Voip on the DMZ? I guess my firewall is still activated on my WRTP54G so It should be fine right?

Ok, being a networking neophyte, I over thought the Voip box with the new router setup. I don't need to be on the DMZ for the WRTP54G to work only as a Voip box with my new router. I just made sure on the WRTP54G to disable DHCP, disabled wireless and kept "Obtain IP address automatically in the admin settings. It works great.

Side note: My internet speed is back to where is used to be before I got the WRTP54G for my router - so nice.
