PostPosted: Sat Aug 19, 2006 9:46 am    Post subject: Problems with WRTP54G...going to switch to D-Link VTA Reply with quote Back to top

Hello everyone...

I have read through most of the posts in the archive pertaining to my problem so that I wouldn't have to create a topic that has already been covered ad nauseum, but my problem still persists. Here's the deal:

I've had Vonage for about 3 months & it worked wonderfully up until 2 weeks ago. My Linksys router (which I just use as an adapter...more on that later) only works an hour at a time, at which point I need to unplug it & wait for it to register my phone line. I have the WRTP54G behind my existing wireless router (Wireless G WRT54G), which connects my computer, tivo, etc.

My internet always works fine...the problem seems to be with the Vonage device, where it will just flake on me & not work at all. The problems started with it doing weird things like telling me I have a voicemail, but when I checked it there were no new messages. Now it doesn't ever let me know I have voicemail....the only way I can find out is through email notifications....but I digress.

I tried to set up the router as described on This page. I disabled wireless in the setup, which created a whole new set of problems. Once I did this, the Vonage adapter wouldn't fully boot...it kept on resetting itself when it tried to register my phone line. I have the most current firmware on it (1.00.62), so that is not the problem either.

I'm not sure if this is just a faulty device or what, but I have ordered the D-Link VTA in hopes that it will simplify things & get my phoneline working again. I know that my Vonage has the potential to work perfectly, which is why I am at a loss for what to do. I don't want to use the Vonage router in lieu of my current one, because I read on here that it is better to use it as a straight phone adapter.

Has anyone made this switch before? And if so, did it benefit you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No responses? I think I may have discovered the problem....

I had the WRT54GP2 layed out flat on my desk & I would notice that it would get very HOT in a relatively short period of time (30 minutes usually). Last night after the line crapped out on me again, I reset it & stood the router upright just to see if maybe it would help. Lo & behold, the line has been up & active for 12 hours straight. The thing is still kind of hot, but I guess it has more ventilation this way. Should I even bother with this unit or should I switch to the D-Link? I'm thinking about getting a little clip-on desk fan to blow on it, but this seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for an overheating, 3 month old router.

Since you already have a wireless main router and you've already ordered the D-link adapter, I'd go with the D-link. If the WRT54GP2 is running that hot, I'm afraid it's only a matter of time until it gives you more trouble.

You're right. Besides, 10 minutes after submitting my last message (about how I fixed the problem), the line went dead again. Ha ha, couldn't see that one coming! Very Happy

Hopefully the D-Link will work out OK.

So far in the two months I have used Vonage, my D-Link has performed well (knock on wood), but from what I understand, some of the Vonage devices with built in routers don't operate as well as the simple VTA's. I liked the D-link, because it is small and simple, and I haven't read as many complaints on it as I have some of the other devices.

I am curious to learn how the D-Link VTA works for you.

OK, here's my update.

I got the D-Link VTA today, activated it & got it up and running. It has been on for 5 hours now with no problems. That may not seem like a lot, but with the WRTP54G, service would be cut off within 30 minutes. I really think the Linksys router/adapter was faulty. I see a lot of people having problems with it when they use it as a router, but they usually said that it worked fine as an adapter...not the case for me.

Anyway, I like the D-Link better because it is simplified & perfect for my setup. If anyone is going through hell with their WRTP54G behind their existing router, I would recommend the VTA.

Thank you Steve48 & stan2841 for your help!

Glad to help. I am curious to see how the D-Link works out for you in the long haul, like maybe after a month or two. Good luck & keep us posted.

****UPDATE****

I'd just like everyone to know that since I have gotten the D-Link VTA, my phone line has been absolutely perfect. It hasn't cut out even once & the voice quality is perfect. This was definitely a good decision...if anyone is having problems with the Linksys router/adapter, I would recommend switching.

Now, if only I had a sledgehammer, I would show the WRTP54G exactly what I think about it. Wink
