Not to squash any solutions, but my understanding is that the DI-524 does not have QoS which could easily be part of the problem. I know this because I also have a DI-524. Just something to consider. |

Just to close out this chapter......I ordered a new cable modem (linksys befcmu10), connected it up with the cable company, and my phone has now been working for several days. My voice does not drop out, and my telephone conversations are once again comfortable (like the old landline days).
Thank you much for all the helpful suggestions. There seems to be an incompatability between the Motorola SB5120 and Vonage. The right people should get together and try to fix it. Not my windmill.......

G'day all and a happy update from my end also after suffering months (since April) of being jerked around by Comcast - we dumped our SB5120 and went to the Linksys modem - INSTANT FIX! We made the swap Saturday the 19th and I wanted a good run before reporting back in - and all is GOOD! We've gabbed well over an hour at a whack on the phone many a time and no more drop outs, no more breaking up. ALSO I am able to video conference again - it was so bad on the SB5120 that I was so garbled I couldn't be understood and my image would freeze. This issue affected far more than Vonage - those who do gaming, VPN etc - all the real time P2P stuff - so I'm very happy on one hand, we're good - BUT very upset that Comcast is in complete denial of any issues with the SB5120 whatsoever. They owe a lot of people a refund of 4 months of service due a change in modem firmware that messed us all up - you can well imagine that cost - or the cost of swapping everyone out - so they're certainly not going to admit a problem. You're the first I've heard on Cox Sumner, I do have friends in Phoenix who are flying fine on Cox with the 5100 series - and Cox has always been able to provide better up and down speeds than Comcast. The depth and breadth of this Motorola issue will never be admitted however - so who knows.
I'm so happy you found this forum and got yourself sorted right away! On that note - thank you to EVERYONE here for their input that inevitably got us up and running again! The monopolies don't care about us so stay with the forums to help others, it's the only chance us little people have of winning.
Best to all from Gina south of Boston |

Sumner and Gina,
I'm so glad to hear that you are both back up and running. On a side note, Sumner, it appears that the incompatibility is not between Vonage and SB5120 b/c there are many like myself with no issues. But the real incompatibility is what Gina alluded to, it's between Cox and the SB5120. I have read in earlier posts about some issues with Cox. Anyway, it's all water under the bridge now.
Basically, let the word out that anyone with SB5120 and Cox or Comcast might run into issues with real time applications like Vonage. |
