PostPosted: Thu Aug 17, 2006 9:27 pm    Post subject: WRTP54G wireless is running slower and slower Reply with quote Back to top

When I first got the Linksys WRTP54G several months ago I had no issue with speed, but lately I have noticed delays going from web page to web page getting longer and longer and longer.

When I plug any of my computers into the cable modem (also a linksys with Comcast 6Mbp down 300k up) IE opens up right away and moving from page to page is instant. Same for when I take these laptops to work on my T-1 line there.

The problem is when the laptops are going wireless on the WRTP54G sometime it can take 10 seconds or more before IE or other apps even think about moving to the new page or start a download. However once the download starts, it appears to move at a decent rate.

A perfect example is a Speed Test that downloads a large single file from a server. These test alway show reasonably close numbers however there is a long delay on starting the test when I am wireless.

Have there been any update to the phone portion of the routers by Vonage lately that can explain the sudden delays?

What happens if you plug a computer directly into one of the WRTP54G LAN ports? Also, what happens if you enter an actual URL address rather than a website name?

You can try bypassing the WRTP54G's DNS server, which is fairly weak and prone to issues:

I will give that a try. That would explain why downloads are not affected, but moving from page to page (server to server )would be affected.

Back before I completely gave up on the WRTP54G as a router, that was the very first workaround I had to do to it. It's probably improved a bit since, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear it is still weak. I would get LOTS of "page not found" errors after the DNS lookup finally timed out.

One other thing to check - make sure your router is at 1.00.62 for firmware. Some of the older firmware versions had a LOT of issues with call waiting, caller ID, voice quality, etc. Vonage should update it for your automatically, but the WRTP54G has some initial problems doing the upgrade in a few cases:

I have these types of problems using any kind of bittorrent client. It generally requires a reboot or I get all kinds of problems.

I also found that using my ISPs DNS server IPs vs. the router interface IP solved my name resolution problems.

seac0rd -

Yes, the WRTP54G and RTP300 are not good BitTorrent/P2P devices. The problem is that the routers try to remember every connection they've made for 5 full days, rather than idling out connections in a more reasonable time.

Unfortunately, there's no real way you can fix it, other than to put another router in front of it, like I did last October after months of frustration.

Turning off their DNS proxy worked. Everything loads really fast again.

I see that there is also another connection issue mentioned here by NateHoy that explains another problem I have but just lived with. I often VPN into work from either of the computers that I have in the house and I noticed that if I VPN from one computer I cannot VPN through the other even if I close the connection on the first.

I have noticed that the problem does go away after a few days, but now that I know what is going on I am irritated with my router. Evil or Very Mad

JordanCN -

Welcome to the WRTP54G-as-a-router hater's club! Annual dues are, fortunately, reasonable. Just send me all your money via PayPal and I'll send back what I can't spend. LOL.

Seriously, the WRTP54G works out for some people, and it's a truly great Vonage device, but it is (at best) a consumer-grade router. It has all sorts of hassles with some VPN connections, is completely incapable of BitTorrent due to the standard Linksys 5-day connection default, and to top it off, the QoS doesn't work at all (at least not for me), so it can't prioritize voice traffic over other stuff.

I'd recommend taking a couple of months of your Vonage savings, buying a Linksys WRT54GL (note the "L", very important), and load some aftermarket firmware on it. I did that last October and MAN, what a difference in performance, reliability, stability, and the all-important WAF (*).

Here's a quick how-to:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54gl.html

(*) WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor, the Factor against which all others pale by comparison. Wink
